The Cask of Amontillado Edgar Allan Poe
The story takes place in... • A European Country, probably Italy.
Carnival? Like the fair? • Nope. Carnival is like Mardi Gras. • Mardi Gras is the festival that kicks off Lent. • Lent is the 40 day time period before Easter. Some Christians use Lent as a time of fasting and reflection about Jesus’ s execution and resurrection. Mardi Gras is their last chance for light hearted fun until Easter.
Who are the characters? • The main character, and narrator, is Montresor. Montresor vows revenge against Fortunato, who has insulted him. • Fortunato, on the night in question, is partying at Carnival. He is dressed as a jester and is a little tipsy. He falls into Montresor’s trap easily.
What trap? • Montresor knows that Fortunato fancies himself a “wine affectionato”. That means he knows a lot about good wine. He is like a wine taster. Montresor tells him that he has acquired a cask of Amontillado. A cask is a barrel of wine. Amontillado is a VERY expensive wine from Spain.
And? • Montresor leads Fortunato down to his family’s catacombs.
Catacombs are... • Underground tombs.
So our story is one of • Revenge, wine, and tombs.... • Sounds like fun, right?
