  4. Time Management& Study Skills • Meditate & Pray • Talk to God before you start & after you finish • Pray during the good times and during the bad days. • “Name It. Claim It. Believe it and receive it.” • Verse in a popular gospel song. • Find your mantra to keep yourself encouraged.

  6. Time Management& Study Skills • Find a Conducive Study Environment • Go to library to study • Study with a serious student • Compare lecture notes with serious students • Bring snacks & water • Don’t eat heavy foods while studying

Time Management& Study Skills • Create a Study Schedule (see attached) • Stay Organized • Set realistic time completion goals • Block time for breaks • Start assignments early (minimize cramming) • Bring all necessary study materials • Stay rested Procrastination = Suicide Complete assignments when they are assigned NOT when they are due!!

  8. Taking Lecture Notes • Reasons for taking Lecture Notes: • Note taking forces active listen • It tests your understanding of the material • When reviewing, notes gauge what is important • Notes are easier to remember than text. • Notes helps you to remember the material

Taking Lecture Notes • Instructor clues of what is Important: • Material written on the blackboard • Repetition • Emphasis on words with their tone & gesture • Subjects that the instructors spends a lot of time on • Word Signals • Reviews given at the beginning of class • Summaries given at the end of class

Taking Lecture Notes • Helpful note taking methods: • Keep your notes brief (use phrase instead of sentences, use abbreviations) • Use your own words • Use outline form and/or a numbering system • If you miss a statement, write key words, skip a few spaces, and get info later • Leave room on page to add future notes • Date your notes, number your pages KEEP IT SIMPLE

Save Time on Note Taking • Do It Right The First Time! • Do not rewrite your notes later • Shorthand is valuable for secretaries not students • Notes in shorthand cannot be studied in that form • Shorthand must first be transcribed • Shorthand takes a lot of time • Do not tape record the lesson • Tape recording does not allow for easy, flexible studying of notes between classes at library, etc.

Note Making • Effective Note Making Hints: • Don’t write down everything you read or hear • Be alert & attentive to main points • Concentrate on the “meat” of the subject • Write down key words or short phrases • Use your own words but keep it accurate • Quote correctly when using direct quotes

Note Making • Effective note making tips ‘cont: • Don’t Just Take Notes to Take Notes! • Think about what you are writing before taking notes down • Use a skeleton outline & indent to show importance • Leave lots of white space for later additions • Omit descriptions/ full explanations • Keep it short & sweet • Keep all your notes neat, organized and in one place
