Chapter 7 Lesson 4 The Female Reproductive System
The Female Reproductive System Three main Functions - Stores and releases female reproductive cells called eggs - System allows fertilization to take place - Nourishes and protects the developing child until birth
The Female Reproductive System Ovaries – Female reproductive glands. - Produce Estrogen - hormone that regulates female sexual development
Fallopian Tube Egg travels from fallopian tube to uterus
Uterus Fertilized egg becomes implanted. The pear shaped organ where child developes
Endometrium Lining of the uterus
Cervix • Opening at the bottom of the Uterus
Vagina • Muscular passageway leading from the uterus to the outside of the body
Menstruation • Once puberty begins, the ovaries star to release a single mature egg (ovulation) • At same time lining of the uterus thickens • If fertilization – egg implants • If no fertilization – egg shed along with thickened lining (menstruation) • Happens about every 28 days – last 5-7 days
Fertilization • Sperm entering the vagina travel to the fallopian tubes • Fertilization takes place I the fallopian tube when male sperm cell and female cell unite • Egg then moves from fallopian tube to uterus and implants
Caring for the Reproductive System • Shower or bath daily (keeping clean especially important during menstruation) • Regular check ups with gynecologist • Monthly breast exams to check for unusual lumps • Keep record of your menstrual cycle, to make sure it does not become irregular
Problems of the Female Reproductive System • Premenstrual syndrome – (PMS) – May cause physical and emotional changes • Headaches, breast tenderness, irritability • May be mild or severe Toxic Shock Syndrome – Rare Bacterial infection linked to use of tampons - high fever, rash and vomiting, death if not treated - Avoid using high absorbent tampons and change every 4 hours or more
Problems of the Female Reproductive System • Infertility – Being unable to produce children • Vaginitis – Vaginal infection, causing itching, pain • Cancer – Can affect breasts, ovaries uterus, or cervix
