  1. Helicopters - The Future of Logging

  2. Helicopters: Finding the Middle Ground “When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the universe” – John Muir “Who cares about the environment anyways?” – Taylor Nigh 1800’s 1900’s Present Day “Conservation means the wise use of the earth and its resources for the lasting good of man.” – Gifford Pinchot

  3. What Does All of This Mean? • Preservation- To keep in perfect or natural, unaltered condition, or to maintain unchanged. • Exploitation- To utilize for profit, to use for one’s immediate wants without consideration of lasting impact. (Abuse, Clear-cut, erosion, habitat loss) • Conservation- To use or manage natural resources wisely, without waste. (Natural resource management, middle ground)

  4. Why Helicopters Are Better • Tractors and yarders tear up almost everywhere they go • Much quicker, more nimble • Takes almost no room • Less lives at risk

  5. We’ll Always Need Wood • We use wood for almost everything

  6. Middle ground

  7. Presentation: Helicopters and the Evolution of Natural Resource Management • Thesis: Helicopters are the best method of logging for the future • (50%) Explain the visual chart: • Exploitation: Abuse, clear cut, erosion, loss of habitat • Preservation : John Muir, fringe group, mainstream • Conservation : natural resource management, middle ground, low impact • (10%) Tractor and Yarder logging will be diminished greatly because of their significant impact on the environment • (10%) The demand for timber will continue as our population grows, helicopters will be the best way to meet that demand • (5%) Helicopters will circumvent possible lawsuits because of their minimal impact on the environment. • (5%) Helicopter logging will provide the middle ground between environmental groups and the timber industry • 20% will be on functionality of PowerPoint and physical quality of speech (as opposed to content of speech) NON-NEGOTIABLES • Speech must be between 2 minutes and 3 minutes • Failure to meet basic proficiency will result in a “do-over” until the standard is met
