  1. NEED TO GET FUNDING, SO NEED TO WRITE A GRANT… Where to start?? Basic Questions: • 1. Find out what kind of funding fits your career level and proposal idea: • Am I eligible to write a Career Development Award(K series)? • Can I submit a Research Grant proposal (R awards)? • Is there an RFA available? • 2. Find out which funding is available at this time and the DEADLINES: • Give yourself a reasonable amount of time to flush out the experimental • design, to get the supporting information about key personnel, for peer • review, and potential time needed for material from mentors. • Factor in time for figuring out budget details with administrative help. • Factor in time for appropriate signatures on forms prior to submission (how does this work now that submission is electronic??)

(<25 pgs., including all tables & figures) • Contents of Research Plan: • Answer these questions (a-d): • What do you intend to do? • Why is the work important? • What has already been done? • How are you going to do the work? • Specific Aims • Background & Significance • Preliminary Studies/Progress Report • Research Design & Methods ~1 pg 2-3 pgs 6-8 pgs X pgs • Format suggestions: • Restate specific aim & elongate hypothesis by tying in preliminary result from above. • Rationale • Experimental design • Expected results • Pitfalls & future studies • Human Subjects Research • Vertebrate Animals • Literature Cited • Consortium/Contractual Arrangement • Resource Sharing • Consultants <40 relevant & pertinent to the work cited in proposal.
