IIMT OXFORD BROOKES UNIVERSITY INNOVATION CHALLENGE 2012 ROLE OF SOCIETY AND GOVT FOR THE CONSERVATION OF ENVIRONMENT PARIKSHIT THOUDAM 14 DEC 2012
INTRODUCTION • AT THE START OF THE PRESENT MILLENNIUM, CIVILIZATION REACHED A CROSSROADS, UNABLE TO HALT THE TECHNOLOGIES THAT CONTINUE TO EXPLOIT THE EARTH’S RESOURCES AND FACING THE PROSPECT OF A CONTINUOUS RISE IN THE HUMAN POPULATION, WE SEEM TO BE ON A STAGE ON WHICH AN ENORMOUS HUMAN-ENVIRONMENT EXPERIMENT IS BEING PLAYED.
WHAT THE PROPOSED IDEA IS! IN INDIA, FOR EQUAL REPRESENTATION WE HAVE DIFFERENT CONSTITUENCIES AND THE IDEA IS TO MAKE USE OF THIS OUTCOME OF POLITICS INTO A TOOL FOR SCIENTIFIC EXPLOITATION. THE IDEA IS TO START PROJECTS IN EACH COMMUNITY DEALING WITH THE “GHOSTS” OF THIS 21ST CENTURY WE CAN START MINI- CONSTITUENCY BASED PROJECTS.
NEED OF THE PROJECT POLLUTION THE RUINS OF CHICHEN ITZA
SOLIDWASTE • THE PROJECT PROPOSES THE 5R’s IN A WHOLE NEW APPROACH. • THE PROJECT ENVISAGES “REGIONALIZED RECYCLING” WHERE THE RECYCLING IS DONE ON A LOCALITY BASIS. DIFFERENT FACET OF SOLID WASTE
SOLID WASTE: EXECUTION DETAIL PYROLYSIS BIOGAS PEP PLASTIC HANDICRAFTS COMPOST GLASSPHALT
WASTE WATER • THE PROJECT ENVISAGES TO DEVISE A TREATMENT PLANT BASED ON INDIGENOUS TECHNOLOGIES TO REUSE THE GRAY WATER RELEASED FROM HOUSEHOLD USE. DIFFERENT FACET OF WASTE WATER
WASTE WATER TREATMENT: EXECUTION DETAIL LAYOUT OF WASTE WATER TREATMENT SANITARY WASTE MANAGEMENT DRUMSTICK
ORGANIC FARMING AND HYDROPONICS CASE STUDIES INDIVIDUALS MAKING A DIFFERENCE UN CONFERENCE
ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS NO POWER CONSUMPTION EMPLOYMENT WATER CONSERVATION SOIL CONSERVATION EDUCATION
BUDGET • PICK-UP TRUCKS / RICKSHAWS , TONGA (HORSE PULLED CART) MAY BE USED AS MORE BIO-FRIENDLY TRANSPORT. • MENIAL LABOUR • PLASTICS BINS AND BIOGAS PLANT. • INITIAL LAYOUT OF TANKS, PIPES, BAR SCREEN, COMPOST PIT ETC WOULD BE COSTLY. MOREOVER, REGULAR MAINTENANCE IS MANDATORY.
UNIT COST TO DECIDE THE BUDGET • BIOGAS PLANT:-Rs 25,000/-per 1CUM • PYROLYSIS:-Rs 15,00,000/-per 10 metric ton • TRANSPORT :- (Truck+tonga) Rs 14,02,000/vehicle • LAND (can be provided by the govt) • TANKS :- Rs 25,000/-perCUM • PIPES :- Rs 30/-per metre(water delivery) Rs 20/-per metre(gas delivery) *prices may vary as per specification and location COST BENEFIT ANALYSIS:- It will always be in favour of benefit as benefit will outweigh the initial set up cost plus the running cost
STAKEHOLDER’S CONTRIBUTION • GOVT CAN ESTABLISH PROCESSING FACTORIES REQUIRED TO MANAGE THE WASTE VIZ- PYROLYSIS PLANT, BIOGAS ETC. • REDUCING TAX . • REQUIREMENTS THAT ALL PACKAGING BE REUSABLE OR MADE (AT LEAST PARTLY) OF RECYCLED MATERIALS. • TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL AND LEGAL SUPPORT TO NGO’S, BUSINESSMEN, VOLUNTEERS ETC SO THAT THEY CAN BRING ABOUT A DECREASE IN SOLID WASTE GENERATION AND PROVIDE ASSISTANCE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF RECYCLING MARKET. • DEMARCATING A DEFINITE SHARE OF THE GAS AND WATER TAX LEVIED BY THE GOVERNMENT FOR THE PROJECT WORKERS. • GOVERNMENT SHOULD CARRY OUT REGULAR QUALITY CHECKS OF THE TREATED WATER TO MAINTAIN SAFE TREATMENT PROCEDURES. • DIVERTING MNREGA WORKFORCE.
CONCLUSION • MOTHER NATURE CREATED OUR PLANET EARTH SUCH THAT WE REMAIN DEPENDENT ON EACH OTHER FOR OUR EXISTENCE. • THE ASSURANCE THAT WE WILL STILL SURVIVE TOMORROW IS DICTATED BY HOW WE HAVE BEEN LIVING OUR LIFE IN THE PAST AND THE PRESENT. • OUR FUTURE EXISTENCE IS SECURE ONLY IF WE JOIN OUR HANDS TOGETHER AND STRIVE FOR THE CONSERVATION OF OUR ENVIRONMENT AND OUR SURROUNDINGS.
