Video Streaming for Web Pages Jacqueline Altieri
What is it? • “A sequence of moving images that are sent in compressed form over the Internet and displayed for the viewer as they arrive.” • “Streaming media is streaming video with sound.”
Benefits… • “With streaming video or streaming media, a Web user does not have to wait to download a large file before seeing the video or hearing the sound.” • “media is sent in a continuous stream and is played as it arrives.” • Streaming video can “distributed as part of a live broadcast ‘feed’.” • Ex: watching sports games on your computer as they are being played live
When Did Streaming Video Begin? • People have been trying to streamline media ever since personal computers became prevalent in households • Streamlining media was uncommon because the technology to support that amount of data did not exist • “Bandwidth” and CPU power • Even until recently, “Buffering” was a major problem with streamlining video • Just not enough bandwidth for all the data
The Improvements • Around the year 2000, advancements were made in internet and computer technologies • “Greater network bandwidth” • “commercialization of the Internet” • More powerful computers that support higher levels of data • All of these advancements made is so that media could be transmitted via web pages more instantaneously and smoothly • Not as many annoying “buffering” issues
Today’s leading streaming media platforms • Microsoft Windows Media • Adobe Flash Video • Real Networks Real Player • QuickTime • But many web pages have media streaming platforms built in • Do not require a separate viewing window • (CNN.com is one of these web pages) • CNN link
Limelight Networks:“Stream rich media in the way that fits your unique business” • One of the many companies that delivers rich media files to internet users • For example, one of Limelight’s clients is abc.com • Limelight then provides the CDN (content delivery methods) necessary for that web page to streamline media to its audience • “With LimelightSTREAM, you’ll have comprehensive live and on-demand streaming delivery” for the most popular media platforms (Microsoft Windows Media, QuickTime, etc).
Why web pages use Streaming • “Streaming is the best method for broadcasting live events, enabling global audiences to watch or listen in real time.” (Limelightnetworks.com) • Streaming can deliver on-demand media, even long-form content • People can watch entire episodes of television shows with video streaming • Ex:hulu election 2008
Implications of Video Streaming for Web Pages • Clear sign of how today’s population is much more dependent on computer and Internet technologies to receive information • People no longer have to watch their favorite television shows live because they can go to the network’s web page and watch it at their convenience • People are able to receive news coverage as it is happening or after the fact • Allows people to stay informed with national and global news information • Forces networks and companies to stay up-to-date with media advancements • If fox.com offers streamlined media content to its audiences, then cnn.com has to also overall advancements in internet business development • foxnews.com
Political Implications • Because web pages offer streamed media content, more people have access to political speeches, interviews, debates, etc. • People can stay on top of what is happening with political campaigns • In the past, people had to be able to watch the content as it was delivered live on television, or they would only be able to read about it later or watch clips on news programs • Now people are able to view the entire program when it is convenient to them • Streamed media also allows people to pause, jump ahead, or repeat content as they wish. • Downside: allows people to be too selective about the media coverage they choose to view…?
Political Implications • Politicians can put streamed media directly onto their campaign websites • Streamed video of them “speaking directly” to the internet audience • Higher efficacy in getting their message to the audience? Barack Obama website http://John McCain website

Thank you. • With the rising prevalence and reliance on video streaming on web pages: • Will there be a significant decline in the live television viewer audience? • I, for one, do not even have a television in my apartment because I know that I can find any show or piece of news information that I want to see on the Internet
