Accommodation Review – Central Guelph Priory Park Task Force George van der Merwe
Our Position • ARC proposed two scenarios • Scenario A: Priory Park becomes a single track, English only school; grades JK-6 • Scenario B: Priory Park becomes English/French Immersion (FI) dual track school; Grades JK-6 • We support Scenario 1 • Survey: 66% response; 90% support Scenario 1
Four reasons to support Scenario A • Community development • Composition of community • Multi-residential housing; Single-income families; New Canadians • > 70% walkers • School serves local community • Food program • Robust ESL program (ESL/EA time increased from 0.1 to 0.7) • Cohesive community • 75-100 volunteers • Impact of FI/dual track • Disruption of close-knit school community • “Two schools in one” • Safety concern due to increased traffic
Four reasons to support Scenario A • Community development • School-on-the-move • Only Guelph school of UGSB in 2008 • Result of adaptation of teachers to community • Benefits to students and community • Impact of FI/dual track • Loss of teaching mechanisms • Loss of ‘School-on-the-move” status
Four reasons to support Scenario A • Community development • School-on-the-move • Program • Well-developed ESL program; essential out-of-class exposure to English • Peer mentorship in a smaller school • Community development brought into school environment • Impact of FI/dual track • Board prefers FI to be fully integrated in to ALL school activities • Compromise existing relationships
Four reasons to support Scenario A • Community development • School-on-the-move • Program • Geography • Only English school close to current FI Centre at John McCrae • Serves a large catchment area • An FI/dual track • Generate overlapping boundary areas for walking students • Resolved by developing an FI Centre further south in Guelph
Alternative options to maintain enrolment at Priory Park • Move gifted program from FA Hamilton to Priory Park • Reassigning children from Married Student Housing regions (University of Guelph) to Priory Park • High density housing developments • Approved for region around ESSO gas station • Submitted for St. Paul school site
Major concerns • Board outlines the need for FI Centres • A dual track school contravenes several of the Board’s guiding principles • Board has a track record of converting dual track schools into FI Centres • Major concern Priory Park will become an FI Centre • Tragedy in this community • “The introduction of FI at Priory Park will jeopardize a school that has overcome many challenges and adapted efficiently to the local community after years of effort and planning.”
