Compressors, Clutches, and Drives Chapter 8
l. Objectives • Explain the purpose of a refrigeration compressor. • Identify the major parts of radial and axial piston compressors. • Explain the operation of radial and axial piston compressors.
ll. Objectives • Identify the major parts and explain the operation of rotary vane compressors. • Identify the major parts and explain the operation of scroll compressors. • Explain the operation of a capacity control valve.
lll. Objectives • Explain how the engine drives the compressor. • Explain the purpose of a compressor clutch. • Identify the major parts of a compressor clutch. • Explain the operation of a compressor clutch.
Compressor Purpose • To raise the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant
Body Ears Endplate Crankshaft Crankcase Lip seal Compressor Parts
Compressor Body • The mounting place for other compressor parts • Holds refrigerant and lubricating oil • Made of aluminum on newer vehicles
Compressor Ears • Built-in mounting points for attaching compressor to engine Ears
Endplate • Attached to the compressor body • Low and high side hose connections installed on the body or endplate
Crankshaft and Crankcase • Crankshaft rides on bearings in the compressor body • Crankcase holds the crankshaft
Compressor Parts • Crankshaft drive end extends from the body • Pulley and clutch assembly installed on the crankshaft drive end
Lip Seal • Always installed where crankshaft drive end extends from compressor body
