  1. Networking-example 2 Student: (shakes hands) Mr. Greenberg, I’m JianhuaShen. In July, I’ll receive my IMBA from Renmin University and hope to parlay my private equity internship experience with a private equity firm. Other person: Jianhua, I’m happy to meet you. But please call me Charlie. I’m not with a private equity firm, but my business did receive funding from one. Student: Oh, that’s interesting. What industry or area is your business involved in? Other person: My company, Greenberg Enterprises, owns and operates a chain of fast food restaurants. Student: What type of cuisine do your restaurants serve? Do you have locations in Asia?

  2. Networking-example 2-con’t. Other person: My restaurants serve Texas-style barbecue food. We hope to enter Asia soon. That’s why I needed private equity funding. How about you? You mentioned you have private equity experience. Which PE operations have you worked for? Are you already interviewing with private equity firms? Student: I’ve completed an internship with Citic. I haven’t yet started interviewing. Would you have any suggestions as to whom I might contact? Other person: Perhaps I could introduce you to the private equity firm I used, Fairfield Partners, whose headquarters is in Connecticut. Student: I’d really appreciate your doing so. Shall I send you my resume, or should I send it directly to your contact?

In your email, tell him that I’ve referred you. Student: I’ll do so, Charlie, I really appreciate your providing this entrée. I’ll let you know how things go. And I look forward to dining at one of your restaurants in China. If I can be of any help to you, please let me know. Other person: I’m happy to help. You seem like a very smart and ambitious young man. And I may take you up on your offer to help. It would be great if you’d spread the word about my restaurant once we open in China. Student: I have a large network of friends across China. So I’d be happy to help you. And when you’re visiting China, please let me know. Until then, please accept my best wishes for your business’ continuing success.
