EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES: Online space for HDR student collaboration using Wiggio Cameron Barrie & Jessica Shortis February 2014 vu.edu.au CRICOS Provider No: 00124K
BACKGROUND • Identified a need for an online space where HDR students can collaborate with each other and discuss issues relevant to them • Aims to create a sense of community amongst HDR students (ties in with University strategic goal of building strong research culture) • The Research Ambassadors will play a pivotal role in the creation and promotion of this project with a view to raising the visibility of the RA program.
WHY WIGGIO? • Looked at using Facebook – but decided it wasn’t the best platform for sharing files and collaborating in groups etc. • Spoke to CCLT team regarding this project and Keith Kirkwood suggested using Wiggio • CCLT were keen to find groups willing to test out functionality of Wiggio which can be embedded as part of VU Collaborate
GOAL Create an online space where HDR students can form groups, discuss issues and collaborate with each other. The HDR student online space (using Wiggio) will be coordinated by the Research Ambassadors – they will promote and provide training. http://wiggio.com
CHALLENGES • Finding a sample group willing to participate in the pilot • Create guidelines for using Wiggio • Working out the role of RAs • Creating a service that the research community will find useful and engage with • Giving the project a catchy name…
BENEFITS • Encourage collaboration between HDR students • Increases the visibility of the Research Ambassadors and is a way of increasing the value of the program • Assists with HDR student retention at VU by providing a high quality support network
PROGRESS TO DATE • Project initiated in late 2013 in conjunction with CCLT (Keith Kirkwood) • Set up a working group on Wiggio • Meeting with Lisa Germany (CCLT) to flesh out the project plan
