Greece: Our customs BIRTH
Decades ago , birth used to take place at home. When the baby was born , the midwife informed the father and the others waiting outside the room about the sex of the baby.
The mother did not receive any visitors for 40 days in order to avoid the “evil eye” .
On the 40th day she would take the baby to church . There , both the mother and the baby receive a blessing from the priest . This happens still nowadays . Orthodox mothers go to church with their baby and receive this blessing.
From that day on , people visit the family to wish the best for the new baby , bringing gifts and sweets.
