Indian Maritime Infrastructure at a glance India has 12 Major Ports along 7517 kilometers of coastline which are under the administrative control of Government of India and have been provided with autonomous status for taking decisions; India has 176 Non-Major Ports along the coastline which are under the administrative control of 9 Maritime State Governments; India also has 5-6 Private Ports which are administered by individuals or / and Corporations;

The need for Inland Waterways development in India To bring down the burden on other modes of transportation namely, Railways, Roadways and Seaways; To bring down cost of development of Infrastructure which is just 10% of the cost as compared to Roadways; To bring down the maintenance cost of the transport sector which is 20% as compared to maintenance of road network; To develop eco-friendly transport system with least hazardous in nature.

Vision for development of Inland Waterways in India To increase the level of Inland Waterways from 4.0 billion tonne kilometer to 20 billion tonne kilometer by 2020; To develop all potential Inland Waterways with adequate infrastructure through Public and Private funding; To develop an integrated transport system to facilitate multi- modal transport infrastructure.

  8. NATIONAL WATERWAYS OF INDIA

Present status of development There are five National Waterways namely, The Ganga (name of the river)from Haldia to Allahabad (NW-1,1620 Kilometer) The Brahmaputra (name of the river) from Dhubri to Sadiya (NW-2, 891 Kilometers ) The West Coast Canal (name of the river) from Kottapuram to Kollam (Kerala state) (NW-3, 205 Kilometers) The Kakinada – Puducherry stretch of Godavari and Krishna rivers (NW-4, 1078 Kilometers) The East Coast Canal with Brahmani river and Mahanadi river Delta (NW-5, 588 Kilometers)

Initiative for Inland waterways through Public-Private- Partnerships Development of Berthing facilities with action plan for making national waterways (2),(3),(4)&(5) fully functional; Up-gradation of National Inland Navigation Institute and setting up of State Crew Training centers in riverine states; Joint Venture Projects on Public Private Partnership mode with acquisition and operation of cargo vessels on equity sharing basis; Information technology up-gradation for networking of Inland waterways and Monitoring data during 2010-20; Technical study of the feasibility for Narmada river and Mumbai Waterways, river Gumti in Tripura state, techno- economic feasibility report for National Waterways-6,etc. Indo-Bangladesh protocol routes development with connectivity for Kolkata port for critical river stretches, etc.
