  3. The Silent Generation • Born between 1925 and 1945 • Grew up during The Great Depression and World War II • Valued loyalty and authority

  4. Baby Boomers • Born 1946-1964 • Teenagers during the 1960’s and 70’s • Embraced activism and symbols of peace • Expressed a new distrust toward tradition and authority

  5. Generation Gap • Lack of understanding and communication between the older and younger generations

  6. “The lesson of the 60's is that people who cared enough to do right could change history. We didn't end racism but we ended legal segregation. We ended the idea that you could send half-a-million soldiers around the world to fight a war that people do not support. We ended the idea that women are second-class citizens. We made the environment an issue that couldn't be avoided. The big battles that we won cannot be reversed. We were young, self-righteous, reckless, hypocritical, brave, silly, headstrong and scared half to death. And we were right."    

  7. Changes in Music • Rock and Roll was the defining characteristic of the Baby Boomers • Rock became a weapon of cultural revolution • Urged listeners to reject conventions and political policies of the government

  8. Come mothers and fathers throughout the land and don’t criticize what you can’t understand. Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command. The old road is rapidly agin’ Please get out of the new one if you can’t lend a hand, for the times they are a’changin”

  9. "White collar conservative flashin’ down the street, pointing that plastic finger at me, they all assume my kind will drop and die, but I'm gonna wave my freak flag high."

  10. Drug Revolution -Marijuana, LSD, and other recreational drugs -Advocated as a way to “heighten consciousness -”Tune in, turn on, and drop out”

  11. Sexual Revolution • Sex became more socially acceptable outside the strict boundaries of heterosexual marriage. • Introduction of the Birth Control Pill • Stonewall Riots- beginning of the Gay Rights Movement

  12. Hippies • Experimented with drugs • Wore unconventional clothing • Listened to rock music • Supported political radicals • San Francisco became the center of the counter culture

  13. Woodstock • Symbol of the counter culture • Sometimes called the “Woodstock generation”
