Notes • If a faculty member has primary responsibility for submitting grades or serves as a site director for a clerkship or residency rotation, they must have either an adjunct or affiliate appointment. The department will decide which type of appointment is appropriate. • The LCME expects a faculty appointment if the clinician or research scientist is the primary supervisor of a medical student in any given experience (e.g. clerkship rotation) and has responsibility for evaluating the student. The need for a faculty appointment depends on the level of responsibility, not frequency. • Someone who gives lectures or teaches procedures does not need an appointment. A without salary affiliate faculty appointment is not necessary for those clinicians or research scientists who are teaching students. It is at the discretion of the department (or potential faculty member) if they wish to request an affiliate or adjunct appointment. • If a faculty member is given an adjunct appointment, they must list their title as “Adjunct Assistant/Associate/ Professor” – the clinical designator (i.e. Clinical Assistant Professor) is no longer allowed. • If a tenure track faculty member fails to be tenured at U of M and moves to an affiliate site or becomes a UMP only practitioner, s/he cannot receive an affiliate faculty appointment for a minimum of three years
