Doctoral Degree Requirements • 98 doctoral degrees • PHD, DEN, EDD • Degree Plan, Residency, Preliminary Examination, Research Proposal, Admission to Candidacy, Final Examination, Dissertation or Record of Study, and Graduation
Admission to Candidacy • Completed all graded course work on degree plan (681, 684, 690, and 691 not included), • Have a 3.0 Graduate Cumulative GPA and a Degree Plan GPA, • Successfully complete Preliminary Exam (both written and oral), • Have an approved Research Proposal on file with the Office of Graduate Studies, • Met the residency requirement.
Complete All Graded Coursework on Degree Plan • Successfully complete all courses that require a letter grade to be on the degree plan • OR petition to remove any courses that require a letter grade that have not been completed • Does not include 681, 684, 690, and 691
Two Grade Point Averages (GPA) • BOTH must be a 3.0 in order to graduate. • 1. Degree Plan GPA • 2. Cumulative GPA • Course levels included in the GPA = 300, 400, 600, 700, 900 and HSC transfer courses • Course levels not included in the GPA = Non-HSC transfer courses and 100 and 200 level courses.
Proposal and Proposal Approval Page • Format for the proposal is determined by the student’s committee and program. • Must complete Proposal Approval Form • Must turn in signed Proposal Approval Form and at least FIVE pages of the proposal itself to the Office of Graduate Studies
Residency • An amount of time that a doctoral student must spend in full-time study on the TAMU campus • For students with recognized masters’ degree (64-hour degree plan), two consecutive semesters of full-time enrollment (minimum of 9 hours) • For students without recognized masters’ degree (96-hour degree plan), two consecutive semesters of full-time enrollment (minimum of 9 hours) PLUS one more semester of full-time enrollment • Can be waived if employed full-time. Must submit a Petition for Waivers and Exceptions and a verification of employment from employer
Time Limits • Ten year time limit on coursework • Four year time limit between preliminary exam and final exam • Must be at least 14 weeks between preliminary exam and final exam
