Photo Editing ToolsWorking With Files • Save, Save As… - Menu items used to save your work to your hard drive or floppy disk. • Open, Get, Import – All terms meaning to bring an image into a digital imaging program for editing and manipulation. • Upload – To copy a digital image file from your computer to another location, such as “uploading” a file to the Web for an online auction. • Wallpaper – The background image on your Windows desktop. You can change the wallpaper using Start > Settings > Control Panel > Display. Click the “Browse” button to set your own image as wallpaper.
Photo Editing ToolsWorking With An Image • Selection – The area of an image that you have indicated should be altered when you apply a tool or filter. • Selection Tool – A tool, usually a plus sign, that you click and drag to select an area of an image. You might also draw “freehand” with the selection tool to select an organic shape. • Crop – To make an image smaller by cutting off outside portions • Flip – To create a mirror of an image, either horizontally or vertically.
Photo Editing ToolsImage Vocabulary • Brightness/Contrast – Brightness is the relative lightness or darkness of the color, usually measured as a percentage from 0% (black) to 100% (white). Contrast is the difference between highlights, midtones, and shadows. Higher contrast means darker darks and brighter brights. • Hue – hue is identified by the name of the color such as red, orange, or green • Intensity – Adjusts the strength of the effect as you enter a value or drag the slider. A higher value increases the strength of the effect.
Photo Editing ToolsImage Vocabulary • Noise – Dots and speckles in an image that can be removed by softening the image. • Saturation – Saturation, sometimes called chroma, is the strength or purity of the color. Saturation represents the amount of gray in proportion to the hue.
Photo Editing ToolsTools To Use • Filter – A special effect applied to an image. • Fill – To dump color into a selected area. • Text Tool – Usually a capital “A.” You select the text tool to alter or add text, and to create a text box. Text usually goes inside a text box, which can then be positioned on the image. • Arrange, Move – Many digital imaging programs create images in layers. You arrange or move layers frontward and backward to put one item on top and another item behind. In this way, items overlap or show through one another. • Stitching – To “stitch” together two or more images to create a larger image, such as stitching photos together to create a panorama.
Photo Editing ToolsTools To Use • Clone – A tool that allows you to select a part of an image and then copy or draw that part onto another section of the image. • Colorize – To add a color or tint to an image, such as making an image more red or more blue. • Lighten, Dodge – To make a section of an images paler or lighter. • Darken, Burn – To make a section of an image darker or more shadowed. • Blur – Tool that creates a diffuse, softened effect. • Soften, Sharpen – Tools that make an image clearer and crisper, or softer and blurrier.
