Terrorism: • Domestic • “the term `domestic terrorism' means activities…[that ] involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State; appear to be intended (i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population; (ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or (iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.
INTEREST GROUPS • ACLU The American Civil Liberties Union is a U.S non-profit organization. • The ACLU is against Patriotic act because they think the act is undemocratic • They also think that the act is harmful to privacy and democracy
INTEREST GROUPS • The ACLU says that “vastly expand[s] the government's authority to spy on its own citizens, while simultaneously reducing checks and balances on those powers like judicial oversight, public accountability, and the ability to challenge government searches in court.” • The union also thinks that the act is the boost in domestic spying powers that the act gives to intelligence and law enforcement agencies. • They say the act might stifle free speech
INTEREST GROUPS • CATO Founded in 1977, The Cato Institute is a public policy research organization. • Strongly opposes the Patriot act due to many reasons
