Class Dojo: daily communication about how your student is doing throughout the day, both strengths and struggles. It is really important for you to check Dojo regularly because I write specific notes about your student’s behavior that day.
Class website: also a daily communication tool. Your students would benefit from being allowed to use our class website and access the specific games I have linked. Let’s take a look: http://www.teacherweb.com/CO/Iowa/Noll
Assigned on Monday and due on Friday One math sheet One reading log…I might change the look of it throughout the year, but there will always be a reading log. Posted on website and in classroom, so no excuses Students must put their name on it
5th grade expectations: Lasts one hour I pull groups, they work independently List is on board Most of time is spent reading silently…50 min.
Grade Level: T, U, V Students must read different kinds of books Rereading is ok sometimes, but they can’t just read the same series or same book all year Must choose just right books-would help to have some parent monitoring
One list every 2 weeks Packet of activities Some time in class to practice, but can/should practice at home as well (on website!) Each list has a different focus. For example: This week: abstract nouns, -ly ending Teaches students grammar and how words work all at once!
50 min. per day 5th grade expectations: -complete sentences -sentence variety -always writes in paragraphs of at least 4 sentences, indent, -third grade skill -once you’re done, you’ve just begun -”I don’t know what to write” is not allowed -reasons and evidence
1 hour block, 15 min. review daily 5th graders should ALREADY know: -multiplication facts, related division -addition and subtraction, without fingers, of basic facts We focus on: fractions, decimals, Algorithms for adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing,
45 min. per day Weather, Mixtures and Solutions, Landforms, Living Systems 5th grade takes a state science test in March/April like the TCAP. Replaced by CMAS Students MUST study at home… concepts new and hard. Notebook can come home
Once per quarter New textbook, more interactive Focus on creation of United States
Big Fifth Grade Field Trip: Skiing at Keystone Usually in February, depends on weather and their schedule Cost: around 25 dollars Need: heavy coat, gloves, hat, snowpants, scarf, sunglasses, lunch, boots (not ski boots-those are provided) -leave earlier than usual and get back somewhere around 4 -more to come later
