JSEA Midwest Conference 2007 Brebeuf Jesuit Indianapolis, Indiana
On behalf of Rockhurst High School Thank You
Gathering Data • Main Feedback from Dallas JSEA Conference 2006 from participants • Strong relationships formed; a familial atmosphere • Focus on different types of diversity • Best types of social activities are dances, and talent shows
Relationships • “Personally, I found that the relationship building was the most important aspect at the conference last year. Getting together in the small group settings and building trust with all of the people. In the beginning, everyone was total strangers. At the end, it was hard to separate us. No one wanted to leave.” • Football game • The sense of unity on the last night in the chapel • No official goodbye to everyone
The different types of diversity • Students want to focus on other types of diversity Examples: • Socioeconomics • Religion • Sexism • Sexual Orientation*
Social Interaction • Students highlighted last year’s school sponsored dance and talent how as two key social zeniths during the conference. • It gave them an opportunity to learn about one another and at the same time, express themselves.
Conference Mantra “Diversity is a lot more than skin-deep”
Our Vision -To create an environment in which students can not only learn the different aspects of diversity we have highlighted, but create an even bigger sense of camaraderie. -Blend all of the quality aspects from the first conference into a homogenous convention of learning and entertainment.
Proposal • Separate schools into different discussion groups at the conference’s beginning. • Each group will represent a different type of diversity (example: Group A-Socioeconomics). The type of diversity each group represents will act as a “homeroom” for the group, where students’ emphasis will be on that type of diversity. • Bulk of the conference would be spent with each group rotating to a different group’s homeroom to learn about that groups version of diversity.
The Pinnacle • The culmination of our learning would take place in a Saturday Night Live type talent show in which students can use talents, skits, and performances to creatively express what they have learned as a group.
Objective • For every student to return to his or her school with a more profound meaning of diversity as a whole. • Also, how to confront certain issues dealing with intolerance.
Other activities we thought valuable • School Power-Point presentations • Possibility of touring a college campus (University of Indiana at Bloomington) • Offers a segue into students preparing for college in a academic and diverse sense
