Life as a boy • At seven years of age, Rolihlahla Mandela became the first member of his family to attend a school, where he was given the name "Nelson", after the British admiral • Nelson’s father died when nelson was nine from lung mildew • The new chief of the Thembu tribe David Motsamayi adopted Mandela his mother was sad but happy he was going to get a proper education
How he got his surname Mandela • This is the name of the clan of which Nelson Mandela is a member. A clan name is much more important than a surname as it refers to the ancestor from which a person is descended. Madiba was the name of a Thembu chief who ruled in the Transkei in the 18th century. It is considered very polite to use someone’s clan name.

6 questions I would ask Nelson Mandela • What went through you when you were expelled from university? • Did you make any new friends in prison? • Which was the best prison Pollsmoor or Robben Island? • Were you calm around white people after you came out of prison? • Was it lonely in prison? • Were you happy when Black people were able to vote and they elected you?
