  2. Health • Is the combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being • In humans, it is the general condition of a person's mind and body, usually meaning to be free from illness, injury or pain.

  3. Wellness • Is an overall state of well-being, or total health. • Wellness is generally used to mean a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit that results in an overall feeling of well-being.

  4. Physical Fitness • Fitness: The ability to carry out daily tasks easily and have enough reserve energy to respond to unexpected demands in the day. • Active Living: A way of life that integrates physical activity into daily routines. • Taking stairs • Walking to work or school • Playing outside

  5. Prevention • Is practicing health and safety habits to remain free of disease and injury. • Washing Hands • Getting yearly check-ups • Obeying rules • Vaccines • Being Active

  6. Stress • Stress: The reaction of the body and mind to handle everyday challenges and demands. • Stress typically describes a negative condition or a positive condition that can have an impact on a person's mental and physical well-being

  7. Lifestyle Choices • The manner in which an individual chooses to live his/her life. • Examples: • Vegetarianism • Vegan • Hippies • Being healthy

  8. Substance Abuse • Is the wrongful use of a legal or illegal substance. • Such as: • Alcohol • Marijuana • Ibuprofen • Codeine • Vicodin

  9. Nutrition • The process by which the body takes in uses food. • Nutrition: The science of food and how the body uses the foods taken in • Nutrients: The chemical substances in food that help build and maintain the body.

  10. Diet Guidelines • Food Guide Pyramid: A diagrammatic representation of recommended portions of the five basic food groups, plus fats and oils • My Plate: Current USDA guideline for portions and nutrients for a balanced diet.

Food Pyramid Guidelines • Daily Requirements • Fruits: 1-2 cups, 2 servings a day • Vegetables: 1-3 cups, 3 servings a day • Protein: 2-6 oz., 2 servings a day • Dairy: 2-3 cups, 3 servings a day • Grain: 3-8 oz., 6 servings a day • Allowances • Fats/Oils: 3-7 teaspoons • Water: 8 servings a day of 8 oz. (64 oz. total)

Government Influences • USDA: United States Department of Agriculture; responsible for developing and executing U.S. federal government policy on farming, agriculture, and food. • They do the research and come up with the nutritional guidelines and the policies that schools and other agencies have to follow. • They create and implement My Plate and the Food Pyramid programs

  15. Benefits of Healthy Eating • Weight Loss • Less diseases and illnesses • More Energy • Better rest and sleep • Beautiful skin • Improved endurance and stamina • Physical fitness • More nutrients in the body

Benefits • Proteins function as building blocks for bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. • Eating a balanced diet may help with weight management. • Balanced diets reduces the risk for diabetes, cardiovascular disease and with lower blood pressure in adulthood. • Diets rich in foods containing fiber, such as some vegetables and fruits, may reduce the risk of heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Malnutrition • Malnutrition:Lack of proper nutrients in the diet. • Malnutrition is technically a category of diseases that includes undernutrition, obesityandoverweight, and micronutrient deficiency among others. • Undernourished:Not eating enough food to keep a healthful body weight and activity level. • Lack of calories and protein in the diet
