Boston ICO Background Inner City Outings Mission • Sierra Club Inner City Outings is a community outreach program that provides opportunities for urban youth and adults to explore, enjoy and protect the natural world. Program Goals: • Promote appreciation and protection of the natural environment through wilderness adventures and environmental education. • Create opportunities for personal growth and development by linking participants from different cultures, foster respect of self and others, and provide participants with outdoor skills training and leadership opportunities.

  10. Boston ICO Volunteers Two levels of involvement depending on your time and interest: Level I: Volunteer Level II: Certified Leader

  11. Level I: Basic Volunteers get to… • Go on trips • Get to know the kids and let them get to know you • Support the trip leader • Shop for lunch and snacks • Drive the van • Take photos • Be in charge of first aid kits • Contribute to a committee

Basic Volunteer Requirements • Be a current member of Sierra Club • > 18 years old • Participate in New Volunteer Orientation • Complete and/or sign the following: • ICO Volunteer Application • ICO Code of Ethics • Sierra Club Outings Volunteer Agreement • DMV Check (for drivers) Well, what’s stopping you?!? C’mon! Volunteer for an ICO Trip now!

  13. Certified Leader Requirements • Complete all “BASIC” requirements • Complete Basic OLT-101 training • Commit to regular attendance on outings for 1 year • Pass the following: • Criminal background check • 2 personal references

  14. Certified Leader Requirements • Assist on at least two ICO outings • Receive favorable evaluations from the Trip Leader Receive official invite to be a Certified Leader from ICO Chair!!

  15. Level II: Certified Leaders get to… • Lead and organize trips • Cultivate and maintain relationship with a partner agency • Train in Wilderness First Aid • Represent Boston ICO at national gatherings • Mentor Assistant Leaders

  16. Boston ICO Training Timeline 2007 • March 2006 • Northeast ICO Leader Training Day • Saturday, 8 to 4 • November 2007 • WFA Certification • Conducted by SOLO • Saturday and Sunday, 8 to 4
