He doesn’t need ESOL… He speaks English fine… Explaining the difference between BICS and CALP
BICS- Basic Interpersonal Communication Skills • Language skills for social interaction • Everyday language skills • Ability to communicate effectively with peers in class, playground, lunch
CALP – Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency • Formal academic learning • Essential for success in school • Normally takes 5 – 7 years to attain • This does not mean just learning new vocabulary – need to learn how to apply knowledge • Includes 4 main areas: • Listening • Speaking • Reading • Writing
BICS vs. CALP We need to use data to determine if proficiency has been made Often, teachers confuse BICS for CALP Just because a student can communicate with peers, does not mean they have attainted English language proficiency We use data from ACCESS testing to determine a student’s proficiency
What is ACCESS?Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English • Determines the English proficiency level • Evaluates the effectiveness of ESOL programs • Provides information to enhance instruction for English Language Learners • Assesses English proficiency gains using a standards based instrument • Provides data for meeting federal and state requirements
ACCESS • Given each year in late January/ early February • Given in Tiers A, B, C and by Grade Clusters • Test administrator needs to be certified each year to administer the test • Domains tested • Oral Language • Literacy (reading & writing) • Comprehension
WIDA ELP Standards • The ACCESS test determined the level of English proficiency: • Level 1 – Entering • Level 2 – Beginning • Level 3 – Developing • Level 4 – Expanding • Level 5 – Bridging
WIDA ELP Standards cont. • ELL students primarily work with 4 language domains: • Listening • Speaking • Reading • Writing • WIDA Standards are accessible at WIDA’s website – www.wida.us
Teaching Strategies for ELL Students • Repeat • Rephrase • Reiterate • Restate • Reword • Modifications checklist & teaching strategies packet will be provided to all classroom teachers with ELL students
When Do We Exit a Student? • Based on ACCESS and GCRCT scores which arrive in May • A LAC conference may be held for some students who have not met clear exit criteria • DIBELS, AIMSWEB, EOCT, GHSGT data are also considered for possible exit
ELL-M Monitoring • ELL-M students have met criteria to exit ESOL • ELL-M students will be monitored for two years • A form will be provided for classroom teachers to assess progress or identify concerns
Parent Involvement • TCP conferences are held to address student testing accommodations • Parents are encouraged to attend LAC conferences • Parents are provided with ACCESS test results in May • Many schools have activities designed to promote parent participation
