ENERGY MOVEMENT, TYPES AND CHANGE
LESSON1 • Energy is the ability to cause change in matter. • Energy can never be made or destroyed, only have a change in its form • Two types of energy classes; potential and kinetic • Potential energy is based on position or condition • Kinetic energy is based on movement
LESSON 1 CONTINUED • An object can possess both types at once ( a wind up toy) • Energy transfer is the movement of energy from one place or object to another.
LESSON 2 • Energy from the sun travels by radiation. • Different types of energy are present in the electromagnetic spectrum; light, heat, gamma and x-rays • Sun is source of almost all energy on Earth. • Energy stored in fuel, and batteries is chemical energy, when used it changes form • Mechanical energy is the total amount of kinetic and potential energy an object has.
LESSON 2 CONTINUED • Electric energy is caused by the transfer of electrons from one place to another. • Sound energy is vibrations in matter, Sound travels omnidirectional pattern. • Energy normally changes form as it is used.
LESSON THREE • All matter has thermal energy because the atomic particles are moving • Heat is the transfer of thermal energy between objects of different temperatures • Heat always goes from hotter to cooler • The more thermal energy an object has the faster its particles move .If enough energy is added the particles separate (boiling water)
LESSON THREE CONTINUED • Energy is transferred by conduction, convection, or radiation • Conduction occurs by contact • Convection occurs by movement of gases or a liquid • Radiation occurs by transfer of energy by waves . Matter does not need to be present for this to occur. This happens in space
LESSON THREE CONTINUED • An insulator slows the transfer of thermal energy • A conductor allows the easy transfer of thermal energy • Reflection occurs when heat or light is bounced off of a surface.
LESSON FOUR • Resources are materials that are used to satisfy a need • Nonrenewable resources (coal, oil, gas) can’t be replaced in a reasonable time frame. • Renewable resources (wind, water, solar) can be replaced in a reasonable length of time • Conservation is making a resource last longer • Pollution dirties or harms the environment
