How to Add Bullets to a Word Document For Use with Microsoft Word 2010 Team A: Courtney Cabeen & Alberto Pina
Introduction This presentation provides information for students on using list styles (bullets and numbering) in a Microsoft Word document. Appropriate use of list styles can help a reader identify and quickly synthesize important information. List styles provide an invaluable tool in creating reader-friendly documents with clear emphasis on key topics.
Materials Needed: • A computer with Microsoft Word 2010 • A Word Document that can be enhanced by the use of bullets and /or numbering
List StylesThere are three types of list styles available in Microsoft word: Bullets Numbering Multilevel • Used to emphasize a list of items of equal importance. • Numbered lists are preferred when items need to be listed in sequential or chronological order. • Multilevel lists are excellent for items listed in a natural order that include sub-categories.

Customizing the List Styles • The Bullet Library lets you choose your bullet design from different available options. You can also use the option “Define New Bullet” to create a custom bullet from an image or a computer font (such as Symbol or Wingdings) • The Numbering Library lets you pick from different number formats, and also allows you to change the starting value for your list. You may want to start at some value other than 1 (or a) or continue the numbering from an earlier list. To do this, select the “Set Numbering Value” option at the bottom of the library. • The Multilevel List Library is very flexible. It allows you to define your own custom list structures, and link the elements of the list to document styles. Some of the pre-defined multilevel list styles include ‘Chapter’ designations or ‘Article’ and ‘Section’ designations
