The Future of Worship • What is the Future of Worship? • What are the values we are passing on to the next generation about worship? • Not something for us to take lightly, because God does not take it lightly.
Psalm 78:1-8 • Things to know before jumping in: • Psalm 78 - a Historical Psalm • Psalm 78 - a Maskil • Asaph - primary influence in writing Psalm 78 • Asaph - a Levite & musician of great renown
Psalm 78:1-8 • Divided into 4 parts: • Plea • Command • Content of the Command • Reason for the Command
The Plea • 78:1 Give ear, O My people, to My teaching; incline your ears to the words of My mouth! • Listen, Carefully Listen, Actively Listen! • Incline: “Stretching Out” • Psalm 40:1 • Psalm 119:36 • Proverbs 4:20
The Plea • 78:2a I will open My mouth in a parable; • Parable: Para means “alongside of” and Ballein means “to throw” • Parables were used by both Jesus (Matthew 13:44-45) and Asaph to give perspective into the present time.
The Plea • 78:2b I will utter dark sayings from of old, • Utter: Fountain overflowing • Dark sayings: Weighty Authoritative Speech or Riddles
The Plea • 78:3 things that we have heard and known, that our fathers have told us. • These stories are not unknown • They heard them, they knew them, but they didn’t KNOW them. (Deuteronomy 5:32-33)
The Plea Application #1 • How often do we ask God to incline our hearts to His testimonies? (Psalm 119:36) • Are we examples of people who are humbly drawing near to God?
The Command • 78:4-6 We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and His might, and the wonders that He has done. He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children.
The Command • 78:4 We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation… • Tell to the coming generation • Genesis 18:17-19 • Deuteronomy 6:4-9
The Command • 78:5a He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, • The Law and the Deeds of the Lord • Genesis 35 • Exodus 20
The Command • 78:5b which He commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children. • Four Generations mentioned • Asaph was serious about the command!
The Legacy of Asaph • 1 Chronicles 15:16-19 With David • 1 Chronicles 16:5;37 • 1 Chronicles 25:1-2 • 2 Chronicles 5:12-13 With Solomon
The Legacy of Asaph • 2 Chronicles 20:14 W/ Jehoshaphat • 2 Chronicles 29:12-15 W/ Hezekiah • 2 Chronicles 35:15 W/ Josiah • Nehemiah 7:44/11:17 After returning from exile
Content • 78:4b But tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and His might, and the wonders that He has done. • It is not self-centered !!! • It is GOD-Centered !!! • It is the Gospel!!! (Ephesians 2)
Application #2 • How seriously do we take the command to “Tell the coming generations of the glorious deeds of the Lord, and His might, and the wonders that He has done”? • Are you a “Disciple Making Disciple”?
Psalm 71:14-19 • (v 14) But I will hope continually and will praise You yet more and more. • (v 15) My mouth will tell of Your righteous acts, of Your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is past my knowledge. • (v 16) With the mighty deeds of the Lord GOD I will come; I will remind them of Your righteousness, Yours alone.
Psalm 71:14-19 • (v 17) O God, from my youth You have taught me, and I still proclaim Your wondrous deeds. • (v 18) So even to old age and gray hairs,O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim Your might to another generation, Your power to all those to come.
Psalm 71:14-19 • (v 19) Your righteousness, O God, reaches the high heavens. You who have done great things; O God, who is like You?
