The Ellipse. Ellipses are conic sections. An ellipse is the set of all points ‘p’ in a plane, that includes two fixed points (F 1 & F 2 ), for which the sum of the distance from F 1 to ‘p’ and from F 2 to ‘p’ is constant and equal to the major diameter. History.

History • The ellipse was first studied by Menaechmus, 380–320 BC, investigated by Euclid, 300 BC , and named by Apollonius, 262 BC 190 BC . The focus and conic section directrix of an ellipse were considered by Pappus. Kepler introduced the word "focus". mathworld.wolfram.com
Facts • All stable celestial orbits are elliptical in shape with the celestial body that is being orbited at one foci of the ellipse. • A beam of light passing through one foci of an ellipse will reflect off of the elliptical shell no more than once before passing through the other foci.
