The Ellipse

The Ellipse. Ellipses are conic sections. An ellipse is the set of all points ‘p’ in a plane, that includes two fixed points (F 1 & F 2 ), for which the sum of the distance from F 1 to ‘p’ and from F 2 to ‘p’ is constant and equal to the major diameter. History.

  1. The Ellipse

  2. Ellipses are conic sections.

  3. An ellipse is the set of all points ‘p’ in a plane, that includes two fixed points (F1 & F2), for which the sum of the distance from F1 to ‘p’ and from F2 to ‘p’ is constant and equal to the major diameter.

  4. History • The ellipse was first studied by Menaechmus, 380–320 BC, investigated by Euclid, 300 BC , and named by Apollonius, 262 BC 190 BC . The focus and conic section directrix of an ellipse were considered by Pappus. Kepler introduced the word "focus". mathworld.wolfram.com

  5. Facts • All stable celestial orbits are elliptical in shape with the celestial body that is being orbited at one foci of the ellipse. • A beam of light passing through one foci of an ellipse will reflect off of the elliptical shell no more than once before passing through the other foci.

  6. The three dimensional ellipse: The ellipsoid
