33. SIS Distinguished Scholar Lecture Authors and Journalist Charles C. Mann “1493: How Globalization Began” Wednesday, November 2, 2011 Pacific Theatre 6:00 p.m. CHARLES C. MANN’s most recent book, 1491, won the U.S. National Academy of Sciences’ Keck award for the best book of the year. A Correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly, Science, and Wired, he has covered the intersection of science, technology, and commerce for many newspapers and magazines here and abroad, includingBioScience, The Boston Globe, Fortune, Geo (Germany), The New York Times (magazine, op-ed, book review), Panorama (Italy), Paris-Match (France), Quark (Japan), Smithsonian, Der Stern (Germany), Technology Review, Vanity Fair and The Washington Post (magazine, op-ed, book review). In addition to 1491, he has co-written four other books: The Second Creation: Makers of the Revolution in 20th-Century Physics (1986; rev. ed., 1995); The Aspirin Wars: Money, Medicine, and 100 Years of Rampant Competition (1991), Noah’s Choice: The Future of Endangered Species (1995), and @ Large: The Strange Case of the Internet’s Biggest Invasion (1998). He has also written for CD-ROMs, HBO, and the television show Law and Order, and was the text editorial coordinator for the internationally best-selling photographic projects Material World (1994), Women in the Material World (1996), and Hungry Planet (2005). A three-time National Magazine Award finalist, he has received writing awards from the American Bar Association, the American Institute of Physics, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Margaret Sanger Foundation and the Lannan Foundation (a 2006 Literary Fellowship). He is now working on a companion volume to 1491; an early excerpt appeared in NationalGeographic in May 2007.

43. Pacific’s Model United Nations Team is recruiting students from all majors The School of International Studies (SIS) is looking for students to join the Pacific Model United Nations Team(MUN). The team will travel to Washington, DC during the fall semester to attend the National Model United Nations conference. This conference is unique in that it hosts over 500 university participants from around the world at our nation’s capitol. Student’s meeting the following criteria are eligible to compete for a spot on Pacific’s team: Minimum Pacific GPA of 3.0 at the end of the spring 2011 semester; One free academic unit to enroll in the MUN course (details below); & Availability to attend the full conference (Thurs., Oct. 20th through Sun., Oct. 23rd, 2011) To apply, please submit a cover letter and resume by the end of business on September 6, 2011 to Kathleen Hastings at George Wilson Hall. Hunter Tanous - Regional Coordinator, Franchise Development at Backpack Farm in Nairobi, Kenya Kim Hargrave - Kim in the University of the Pacific’s Master of Arts Program in Educational Administration and Leadership, with a Graduate Assistantship in Sustainability. David Allen - David is the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship to South Korea, where he is working as a English teaching assistant. Kristal Leonard - Kristal is attending Temple University’s Beasley School of Law on an Honor’s Merit Scholarship.
