  3. 1. Where is New Zealand situated and what does the country look like? New Zealand is situated Southeast of Australia - two large islands, North and South, Area - about 268 000 sq.km The country - hilly and picturesque with rocks, volcanoes, hot springs, and geysers. Characteristic feature: evergreen forests and moderate climate

What are the plants and animals like? - unique kinds of plants and animals - endemic do not grow or live anywhere else in the world bright red Pohutukawa the yellow Kowhai „mount cook“ lily giant Kauri trees . About a quarter of N Z is forested Large areas protected from commercialisation - National parks. e.g.

  10. Fiordland national park – UNESCO World Heritage site the largest in NZ and one of the largest In the world. Many fjords(created by glaciers) lakes, valleys, mountains.. Wildlife – dolphins, kiwi, kakapo, seals. Popular destination for alpine climbers.

  11. Mount Cook national park – UNESCO World Heritage site alpine park, the NZ highest peaks, Mount Cook – the highest Glaciers cover large area Alpine flora – Mount Cook lily Fauna - the only alpine parrot - kea Popular for skiing,mountaineering, tramping and hunting

  12. Tongariro national park – UNESCO World Heritage site Landscape – volcanic origin 3 volcanoes The mountain summits are important to the local Māori. Flora – rain forest – ferns, Fauna – many endemic species e.g. kiwis, wetas, many kinds of birds

  13. 3. What animals are typical of New Zealand? Kiwis - birds with a long narow beak with nostrils at the tip mountain parrots – Kakapo, the world's largest insect – Giant weta up to 20 cm long Tuatara - a reptile (its ancestors were prehistoric dinosaurs)
