How Do Astronomers Measure Distances to the Stars? Vocab -Parallax:an apparent change in position of an object when you look at it from a different position. Key Question -Astronomers often use parallaxes to measure distances to nearby stars -Astronomers look at a star and mark the location in the sky, then six months later they mark it again against sitions then they can figure out where the stars are by us in other stars which they know the pog math. -They can use parallax to measure up to a few hundred light years because after that it gets too far away too small to measure accurately.
How do Astronomers describe the scale of the universe? Vocabulary -Universe: Astronomers define the universe as all of space and everything in it Key Question -To describe the very large and small numbers that make up the size and distances of the universe astronomers use scientific notation. They use a unit called light years to describe the distance between stars.
The Light Year Vocab -Light year- thedistancethat light travels inone year, about 9.46 trillion kilometers (5.878171478565179 trillion miles) Facts -Light years are a measures of distance not time -Light travels at about 300,000,000 meters per second or 12,000,000 miles a minute...thats the fastest speed there is *wink, wink*.
