Why The Sun and the Moon are in the Sky Written and illustrated by Payton
Very long, long, long ago Sun and Moon lived down on Earth, just like us today! 1
Everyday they would go to water’s house and play all day. At the end of the day Sun and Moon, as a chorus, sang, ”Water, won’t you come to our house tomorrow?” Water didn’t reply. 2
Sun and Moon started to walk away then stopped when they heard Water suddenly cry, “Please come to my house tomorrow to play!” “Ok”, replied Sun and Moon. 3
This went on for days and days, until one day, at the end of the day, Sun and Moon asked, “Water, why won’t you come to our house sometime?” 4
Water said, “Your house is too small to hold all of me inside without ruining your beautiful home! I would never want to do that!” 5
So Sun and Moon went back to their house and built another, bigger, better house, just for their best friend, Water. 6
The next day, at the end of the day, just for fun, Sun and Moon sang to Water, “Water, please will you come to our house tomorrow?” Water angrily replied, “I told you, your house is too small!!!” 7
“Not anymore!”, replied Sun. “We built a big house!”, said Moon. “Can I bring my family?” asked Water. “Why not!?!?”, said Moon. “I’ll be there at 9 a.m.” said Water. 8
The next day at 9 a.m. there was a knock on the door. “Who is it?”, called Moon. “Water, can we come in?” “Sure!!!”, replied Sun. 9
Water started to fill their home. There was another knock on the door and Moon called, ”Who is it?” “More Water, can we come in?” “Go ahead!!!”, called Sun. 10
This went on until Sun and Moon were forced to climb from the floor to the chair, chair to the table, table to the counter, counter to the cabinets, cabinets to the attic, attic to the roof, and finally the roof to the sky. 11
Sun and Moon agreed to stay in the sky. They decided that Sun would watch over Water in the day and Moon would watch over Water at nighttime. 12
And every evening, just before Sun sets, his sister, Moon would get lonely and come over to see her brother, Sun. 13
This is how it’s always been, for as long as we can remember, years and years and years and years… 14
…The Sun and the Moon stay in the sky, watching over Water, Sun in the day, Moon at night, Moon still gets lonely and comes to see Sun, thinking about the time that Sun and Moon came into the sky. This is how it’s always been, and always will be. 15
