UNIDO was set up in 1966 and became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1985. • The headquarters are in Vienna, and it is represented in 35 developing countries. • As part of the United Nations common system, UNIDO has responsibility for promoting Sustainable Industrial Development throughout the developing world, in cooperation with its 171 Member States.

JointUNIDO-UNEP Programme on Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) The Programme improves resource productivity and environmental performance of businesses and other organizations and thereby contributes to sustainable industrial development and sustainable consumption and production. • Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) is the continuous application of an integrated preventive environmental strategy to processes, products and services to increase efficiency and reduce risks to humans and environment. • It specifically works to advance: • Production efficiency • Environmental conservation • Human development

Global Network The UNIDO–UNEP RECP Programme builds upon the capacities of 42 National Cleaner Production Centers (NCPCs) and Programmes (NCPPs) established worldwide • Five common service areas • Awareness building and information • dissemination • Professional training • In plant assessments/technical assistance • Policy advice • Transfer of Environmentally Sound • Technologies

RECP & TourismIndustry UNIDO has experience in the practical applications of RECP in the tourism sector and its supply chain, particularly in the introduction of techniques and technologies related to CP, energy efficiency and renewable energy as well as the incorporation of Cooperate Social Responsibility (CSR) elements. • NEGATIVE ASPECTS • OF TOURISM • Contribution with about 5,3% to greenhouse effect • High consumption of resources (water, energy) and production of waste • Destruction of landscapes and threat for biodiversity • Change of local cultures and ways of living • Deficient participation of local communities and unsatisfactory working conditions etc Tourism Industry POSITIVE ASPECTS OF TOURISM • It creates jobs • Important contribution to the growth of the economy • New technologies are spread • Tourism brings people from different nations and cultures together • Cultural treasures and scenic attractions are protected (they attract visitors) etc Objective: to supportGreen Industry by improving resource productivity and environmental performance of industry and service sector

UNIDO Tourism initiatives UNIDO is the executing agency for GEF project in 9 African countries to reduce the impact of tourism related land-based activities on coastal waters Member of the Marrakech Task Force on Sustainable Tourism Sustainable Tourism Projects in Bulgaria and Romania Public-Private Partnership with Kuoni to advance low carbon and sustainable tourism According to the latest UNIDO survey: • About 50 % of the UNIDO-UNEP NCPCs and NCPPs have undertaken tourism-related projects implementing CP and CSR options in the accommodation sector and its supply chain → more than 200 projects worldwide Results obtained: • Reduced production of waste, more efficient consumption of water, energy savings, better working conditions and advanced market competitiveness • Reduced pollution & emission of CO2 as a result of more resource-efficient operational management

RECP project for the Sustainable Tourism in Bulgaria (2007-2010) • Objective: to enhance the productivity and competitiveness of the tourism industry in Bulgaria by fostering the dissemination and the implementation of Cleaner Production and Corporate Social Responsibility concepts • Activities • Awareness building and • information dissemination • Professional training • In plant assessments/technical • assistance • Policy advice • Transfer of Environmentally • Sound Technologies Results • 20 national experts trained on CP • 20 national experts trained on CSR • CP and CSR activities implemented in 20 hotels from 3 different areas • Promotion of Sustainable Destination Management Organizations • Economic, Social & Environmental benefits Centre for Social and Environmental Responsibility (SERC) established

UNIDO-KUONI Partnership “In a comprehensive approach, we address ethical, social and ecological aspects of our business” Kuoni • Supplier Code of Conduct: • Kuoni has been adding “ethical clauses” to the contracts with their suppliers since 2007. The new provisions commit partner hotels to a number of ethical actions, which include abiding by all local employment laws, not tolerating sexual exploitation of children and any sexual or religious discrimination, offering safe and hygienic workplaces, providing legal minimum wages for the work performed and maintaining environmental standards. • → To exert a positive influence on the way Kuoni suppliers (hotel partners) go about their work – • Kuoni is applying the new auditing system Travelife:www.its4travel.com

UNIDO-KUONI Partnership • Travelife System is a sustainability recognition scheme that enables • businesses to actively promote their environmental and general • sustainability efforts • Global brand that is dependable and stands for success • Supported by various tour operators: TUI, Thomas Cook, Kuoni Group • etc. • Certification system: Bronze, Silver, Gold Award The Travelife process consists of 4 steps: improved performance of suppliers The System facilitates performance improvements while at the same time offering recognition and reward for good practice in such fields as environmental management, fair trade and community/employees relations.
