  1. I know that the word "God" is abhorrent to some addicts. I understand this after talking to scores of people over the years. My own understanding of God is not religious, but this aspect of my transformation is so central, that I feel I must share it with others. I believe that with a spiritual focus, there is a sense of freedom than can't come from any other source. It helps with acceptance, facing reality, commitment, as guilt.

  2. These days, health care workers and medical professionals recognize the power of belief and spirituality in how it can influence the course of medical and psychological issues. It has been linked to the speediness of recovery and recuperation from all sorts of illnesses (including mental illnesses). As such, there is a strong history of using spiritual concepts in the treatment of various addictions (one of the most notable is Alcoholics Anonymous). There has been a clear demonstration of the value of this course of action, as it is a central factor in recovery.

Research has shown that increased spiritual practices are associated with better treatment outcomes, while spirituality (in a range of forms or beliefs) play a role in maintaining the gains built during treatment. One study revealed that recovering addicts showed more evidence of spirituality than those who relapsed. However the spiritual term applies to you, spirituality is linked to the human need for fulfilment and a sense of meaning in life.

  4. I am very open about my Christianity, and I believe this is what transformed my life. However, if you have a different set of beliefs or practices that give meaning to your life, then I encourage you to implement them as much as possible. There is very often some crossover in terms of the concepts, as they all relate to the deepest questions that are posed by human beings. It goes to the heart of what it means to exist.
