What kind? • We watched the fast horses. • Red cars outsell red trucks. • A copper pan is difficult to clean.
How many? • Few people attended the show. • Four players were injured during the game. • She received both prizes.
Which one? • Did you buy those shoes? • He is on his third warning.
How much? • Is there enough space in the room? • I expect more effort from everyone. • There has been no rain for three weeks.
Articles • The = definite article • The noun it modifies refers to a specific person, place, or thing. • A and an = indefinite articles • The nouns they modify refer to any one of a class of people, places, or things.
When to use A and An • A—before words that begin with a consonant sound • An—Words that begin with a vowel sound or a silent H • An hour
Proper Adjectives • A proper adjective is a proper noun used as an adjective or an adjective formed from a proper noun. • Proper adjectives begin with a capital letter. • Examples: • Mexican museum • Chicago storm
Adverbs Modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Examples • Mike scrambled quickly from the icy pond. • He was extremely cold. • He had fallen into the pond quiteaccidentally.
An adverb answers the question: • WHERE? • WHEN? • IN WHAT WAY? • TO WHAT EXTENT?
Adverbs Modifying Adjectives • Answers the question: To what extent? • Usually comes directly before the adjective: • very glad • absolutely wrong • almost ready • entirely grateful
Adverbs Modifying Adverbs • Answers the question: To what extent? • Generally comes directly before the adverb: • moved very quickly • climbed almost over • not completely wrong • only just recognizable
Many adverbs are formed by adding –ly to adjectives. • strong + ly = strongly honest + ly = honestly • true + ly = truly happy + ly = happily
