  2. Proverbs 1:7-9 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8 My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother; 9 For they will be a graceful ornament on your head, And chains about your neck.

  3. A. Mother - Wilda Schrock Oatley I'm glad that God gave me no other, To guide me life's perilous way— Than a dear, precious, old-fashioned Mother, New-fashioned in Christ, I should say. A mother whose standards were taken From a Holy, Infallible Book A Mother whose faith was unshaken, Who led me toward Heaven to look. She taught me to reverence the Bible, God's Word to believe and obey; She told me the way of Salvation; From her, I learned early to pray. Glad that my soul was entrusted To one who knew Jesus divine, Her joy in the Lord never rusted- That good Christian mother of mine. There can never for me be another, Sincerely and truly I say. Thank God for that kind of a Mother, God give us more like her today.

  4. GODLY MOTHERS B. We’re going to look at five godly mothers in the bible: Jochebed, Hannah, Lois & Eunice, and Mary C. We can learn much from these godly mothers D. (Prov 1:7-9) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction. {8} My son, hear the instruction of your father, And do not forsake the law of your mother; {9} For they will be a graceful ornament on your head, And chains about your neck.

  5. I. JOCHEBED MOTHER OF MOSES - MOTHER OF ACTION (Num 26:59) The name of Amram's wife was Jochebed the daughter of Levi, who was born to Levi in Egypt; and to Amram she bore Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.

  6. JOCHEBED - MOTHER OF MOSES A. A WOMAN OF FAITH - (Heb 11:23) By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king's command. • FAITH WAS PASSED ON TO MOSES (Heb 11:24-29) By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, {25} choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, {26} esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward. {27} By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. {28} By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them. {29} By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.

  7. II. HANNAH MOTHER OF SAMUEL - MOTHER OF SACRIFICE (1 Sam 1) Now there was a certain man of RamathaimZophim, of the mountains of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite. {2} And he had two wives: the name of one was Hannah, and the name of the other Peninnah. Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children. {3} This man went up from his city yearly to worship and sacrifice to the LORD of hosts in Shiloh. Also the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, the priests of the LORD, were there. {4} And whenever the time came for Elkanah to make an offering, he would give portions to Peninnah his wife and to all her sons and daughters. {5} But to Hannah he would give a double portion, for he loved Hannah, although the LORD had closed her womb. {6} And her rival also provoked her severely, to make her miserable, because the LORD had closed her womb. >>>

  8. II. HANNAH MOTHER OF SAMUEL - MOTHER OF SACRIFICE {7} So it was, year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, that she provoked her; therefore she wept and did not eat. {8} Then Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? And why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?" {9} So Hannah arose after they had finished eating and drinking in Shiloh. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat by the doorpost of the tabernacle of the LORD. {10} And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the LORD and wept in anguish. {11} Then she made a vow and said, "0 LORD of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant, but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.“ >>>

  9. II. HANNAH MOTHER OF SAMUEL - MOTHER OF SACRIFICE {12} And it happened, as she continued praying before the LORD, that Eli watched her mouth. {13} Now Hannah spoke in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk. {14} So Eli said to her, "How long will you be drunk? Put your wine away from you!" {15} And Hannah answered and said, "No, my lord, I am a woman of sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor intoxicating drink, but have poured out my soul before the LORD. {16} "Do not consider your maidservant a wicked woman, for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief I have spoken until now." {17} Then Eli answered and said, "Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have asked of Him." {18} And she said, "Let your maidservant find favor in your sight." So the woman went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. >>>

  10. II. HANNAH MOTHER OF SAMUEL - MOTHER OF SACRIFICE {19} Then they rose early in the morning and worshiped before the LORD, and returned and came to their house at Ramah. And Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and the LORD remembered her. {20} So it came to pass in the process of time that Hannah conceived and bore a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, "Because I have asked for him from the LORD." {21} Now the man Elkanah and all his house went up to offer to the LORD the yearly sacrifice and his vow. {22} But Hannah did not go up, for she said to her husband, "Not until the child is weaned; then I will take him, that he may appear before the LORD and remain there forever." {23} And Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him. Only let the LORD establish His word." So the woman stayed and nursed her son until she had weaned him. >>>

  11. II. HANNAH MOTHER OF SAMUEL - MOTHER OF SACRIFICE {25} Then they slaughtered a bull, and brought the child to Eli. {26} And she said, "0 my lord! As your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the LORD. {27} "For this child I prayed, and the LORD has granted me my petition which I asked of Him. {28} "Therefore I also have lent him to the LORD; as long as he lives he shall be lent to the LORD." So they worshiped the LORD there. A. Hannah was willing to give her son to the Lord B. How many mothers are willing to give their sons as full time servants of God?

  12. III. LOIS & EUNICE - GRANDMOTHER & MOTHER OF TIMOTHY - MOTHERS OF FAITH (2 Tim 1:1-5) Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus, {2} To Timothy, a beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. {3} I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, {4} greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, {5} when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also.

  13. III. LOIS & EUNICE - GRANDMOTHER & MOTHER OF TIMOTHY - MOTHERS OF FAITH A. (2 Tim 3:14-15) But you must continue in the things which you have learnedand been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, {15} and that fromchildhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise forsalvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. B. Lois - Timothy's grandmother (Grandmother only used once in the bible) • May have cared for Timothy while Eunice probably a widow had to work for a living. • Genuine faith dwelt in her, passed on to her daughter C. Eunice - mother of Timothy - passed on to Timothy her faith

  14. IV. MARY MOTHER OF JESUS - MOTHER WITH A FULL HEART Luke 1:26-34 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her, "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!" 29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. >>>

  15. IV. MARY MOTHER OF JESUS - MOTHER WITH A FULL HEART 30 Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end." 34 Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?"

  16. IV. MARY MOTHER OF JESUS - MOTHER WITH A FULL HEART - • Luke 2:15-19 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, "Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us." 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.

  17. IV. MARY MOTHER OF JESUS - MOTHER WITH A FULL HEART - • Luke 2:41-51 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it;44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day's journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him.

  18. IV. MARY MOTHER OF JESUS - MOTHER WITH A FULL HEART - 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, "Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously." 49 And He said to them, "Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father's business?" 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart.

  19. IV. MARY MOTHER OF JESUS - MOTHER WITH A FULL HEART - • What a wonderful woman Mary must have been to be chosen to be the mother of Jesus. • Imagine the things that filled her heart.

  20. A GODLY MOTHER • A godly mother is a mother of action. • A godly mother is a mother of sacrifice. • A godly mother is a mother of faith. • A godly mother is a mother with a full heart. • This mother’s day be thankful if you had a godly mother. • This mother’s day be thankful for the mother you had. • If you didn’t have a godly family, you can. • You have a family waiting for you here. - Matthew 19:29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My name's sake, shall receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life.
