What is it? Raynaud’s disease is a condition that causes areas of your body to feel numb and cool in response to cold temperatures or stress such as fingers, toes, tips of nose, and ears. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/raynauds-disease/DS00433
What it really is! The skin discoloration occurs because an abnormal spasm of the blood vessels causes a diminished blood supply. Initially, the digits involved turn white because of diminished blood supply, then turn blue because of prolonged lack of oxygen and finally, the blood vessels reopen, causing a local "flushing" phenomenon, which turns the digits red. This three-phase color sequence (white to blue to red), most often upon exposure to cold temperature. http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=5226
How do I know if I have it? • Skin coloration upon cold exposure • Mild tingling or numbness of digits (fingers, toes, tip of nose and ears) • Blood vessel spasms become more sustained • Sensory nerves become irritated because of lack of oxygen and causes pain http://www.medicinenet.com/raynauds_phenomenon/page2.htm#4whatare
How did I get it? • Poor oxygen supply to the tissues causing tips of digits to ulcerate which become infected • Due to lack of oxygen, gangrene occurs • High amounts of stress make the body cold causing the same symptoms • When your body is exposed to cold temperatures, your digits lose heat and slow down blood supply http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/raynauds-disease/DS00433/DSECTION=symptoms
How can I cure it? Honestly, there aren’t any cures. Your only options are self care and prevention steps as well as medications to limit pain. A company has created Raynaud’s Gloves, this will help with reduce severity and restore blood supply. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/raynauds-disease/DS00433/DSECTION=treatments-and-drugs http://www.raynaudsgloves.com/
What’s the worst that could possibly happen to me if I am too lazy to treat it? We believe that in the worst case scenario if this disease is untreated then your digits will start to die off of your body and need to be amputated.
What’s so interesting about it? • About 5% of the U.S. population has Raynaud’s. • For most people with this disease is more of a bother than a serious disease. • Raynaud’s disease affects women more than men • Certain medications can aggravate the condition • Warm water can quell an attack • Family history matters. http://www.raynauds.org/index.php/2011/01/7-interesting-facts-about-raynauds-disease/ www.nhibi.nih.gov/health/health-topics/topics/raynaud/
