Polytheism • The belief in 1 god • Each city-state had a different god • Persons decisions decided whether or not the god was happy.
After Death • Your body would leave to the Land of no Return • Your body would be buried with supplies • Bowl of water between hands near the mouth. • Vessels of food and water. • Furniture buried with corpses.
Structures • Ziggurats were buildings that were homes for gods. • Ziggurats had staircases that led from the heavens to the Earth.
Medicine Beliefs • They relied on magic and prayers to drive away demons and punishments from the gods • Occasionally, they would use actual procedures with tools
Customs • Gods were served a great meal of much food. • Here is a daily menu for the god Anu at Uruk: • 12 vessels of wine 2 vessels of milk • 108 vessels of beer • 243 loaves of bread • 29 bushels of dates • 21 rams • 2 bulls • l bullock • 8 lambs • 60 birds • 3 cranes • 7 ducks • 4 wildboars • 3 ostricheggs • 3 duckeggs • and a Big Mac -- justchecking to seeifyouareawake!

Cuneiform • Cuneiform was ancient writing • It was written with a stylus • Cuneiform was wedge shaped • A stylus was the stick used to write • It started with 2,000 symbols then was reduced to 700
Anthropomorphism • Anthropomorphism is the art that represents human characteristics in non-human forms • Animals were incorporated in a large portion of Mesopotamian art
music • Mesopotamians played music in many forms • Musical instruments were made from many different minerals such as lapis lazuli and gold • Instruments sometimes looked like animals
jewelry • Jewelry contained gold, beads and other materials • When you died you were buried with your jewelry

HAMMURABI • Supported education and culture • Created first written laws and punishments • He helped lead the building for the irrigation systems • We still use some of his concepts today
ASTRONOMY • Ancient Mesopotamia relied on astronomy • It lead to the invention of the sun calender • People also found that there were 365 days in a year
EDUCATION • Believed in education • Schools were attached to temples • School was only for boys • Teachers were strict • Education contributed better jobs
WRITING AND MATH • Writing in Mesopotamia was called Cunneiform • The earliest form of writing was in pictographs • The math was based on the number 60 • We still use those concepts today
Mesopotamia social classes! Slaves were controlled by higher class people. The common class could do anything they desire except if it was against the law. For the different classes they have different punishments. Men worked outside the home while the women worked at home. The slaves and women were the lower class. The priest government and land owners were the high class. The farmers and fishers were the common class.
