THE STORY The Great Enemy
THE STORY Who is Jesus? • He is an example, but much more than an example. • He is a master teacher, but much more than a master teacher. • Above all, he is the savior, but what does that mean? • How does Jesus become Savior?
THE EVENTS Matthew 3 & 4 • 3:13, “Then Jesus came … to be baptized” • 3:16, “When Jesus was baptized, immediately … the heavens were opened” • 4:1, “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.” • Baptized, Acknowledged … and then the Devil. • Jesus does not offer us a pass for suffering, but the beginning of the battle with real evil.
THE ENEMY tempted by the devil • Our culture has tried to reclassify “evil” as a “problem” or a “point of view.” • Scripture treats “evil” as a “person,” a forceful enemy to be defeated. • Unless we can be honest about the enemy, we will always lack the tools to defeat him.
THE ENEMY Ancient Views of Evil • Dualism: Two eternal, equal powers in an unendingwar • Monism/Pantheism: Everything is god, and evil is an illusion Modern Views of Evil • Modernism: Reality is chaos; atoms in unending, violent motion • Post-Modernism: Evil is an illusion of perspective
THE ENEMY Christian View of Evil • Evil cannot be reduced to a choice, a system, or a psychological state. • Evil cannot be reduced to “those people over there” – no scapegoats. • Evil is both natural and supernatural. • Evil is both inside and outside. • Evil is both individual and social.
THE FRONT Matthew 4 • v. 3, “If you are the Son of God …” • v. 6, “If you are the Son of God …” • v. 9, “All these I will give you …” • Satan attacks the very identity of Jesus and of God: Who are you to Him? Who is He to you? • Satan attempts to offer something “the easier way”: a kingdom without a cross.
THE FIGHT How Does Jesus Respond? • No magic, no incantations,no blast of glory • Rehearsal of truth • Reaffirmation of trust How Do We Respond? • Rehearsal of truth • Reaffirmation of trust • AND … Turning to Jesus who fought and won Jesus becomes Savior by defeating the enemy.
