Essential Things to Know About Acetonitrile Acetonitrile is a chemical compound and is chemically represented as CH3CN. This colourless liquid is the simplest organic nitrile which widely used as a solvent. Acetonitrile manufacturers in India produce the chemical in large quantities. 1-The chemical is a toxic colourless liquid. It smells like ether and has a burnt and sweet taste. It is also termed as methyl cyanide and is the simplest organic nitrile. The liquid is clear, inflammable and melts at 45 degree Celsius and boils at 81.6 degree Celsius. 2-The liquid is highly soluble in water and readily miscible with ethanol, ether, acetone and other liquids. These are chloroform, carbon tetrachloride. It is inflammable and is easily ignited by heat, sparks or flame and gives off highly toxic hydrogen cyanide fumes when heated. It gets dissolved easily in the water. 3-It’s a by-product from the manufacture of acrylonitrile which is produced using the SOHIO process for the ammoxidation of propylene and ammonia. Acetonitrile can also be produced from the dehydration of acetamide or by the hydrogenation of the mixtures containing carbon monoxide and ammonia. 4-Acetonitrile is also used to extract fatty acids which are there in the animal and vegetable oils.
