  1. Outdoor Learning Experience Parent Information Meeting 2019

  2. Trip Dates Monday, October 28 through Tuesday, October 29

  3. Departure Notes • Students should arrive at MIS at 6:15 AM for a prompt 7:00 AM departure • Drop students at Granada entrance • Students proceed to cafeteria with luggage, sit at advisory table • Buses will be on High School and will be loaded at 6:45 AM

  4. Arrival Notes • Students will be back at MIS on Tuesday about 6:30PM. Follow twitter feeds for up to date info. • Meet students in the cafeteria. • Students must sign out with advisory teacher before leaving the school grounds • Advisory teachers must have written notice if your child is going home with another adult.

  5. Location Located in piney woods of Van, TX

  6. Cabins • Students are assigned to cabins with chaperones in each cabin • Cabins will be mixed advisory to encourage new friendships and team building within their teams. • Each cabin has private showers, beds, and restrooms • Boys room with boys, girls room with girls

  7. Schedule

  8. Learning Groups • Students travel with mixed advisory learning groups as they participate in sessions • 12- 17 students per group; not the same as cabin group • Learning groups led by experienced counselors • Teachers and chaperones accompany learning groups

Classes Expeditions Firsthand look at learned and inherited behaviors of animals, adaptations, and the impact of humans on the environment Challenges Team building activities involving communication, trust, and cooperation American Indians American Indian culture and early explorers Forces in Nature Learning about gravity, friction, and how nature changes our environment

  10. Nighttime Activities Open rec time- field games, zip lines, bouncing pillows, activity center Team games

  11. Chaperones Needed! Responsibilities: • Provide supervision during classes ensuring that students are on task and remain with the group • Sit with students during meals and help direct clean up procedures • Supervise cabins, make sure students get showers and are to bed on time Additional Information: Sign up tonight with a teacher from your team or contact your advisory teacher soon ***All chaperones must complete a background check (on HPISD website). ***

  12. Chaperone Meeting Chaperone Meeting: Parents serving as chaperones are required to attend a chaperone meeting. Date: Wednesday, October 23, 2019 Time: 5:30PM Location: 5/6 Assembly Room

  14. O.L.E. Home Edition We will provide alternative activities for students not attending O.L.E. at SkyRanch Your child will be counted absent if they do not attend school on ‘camp” days. Please notify the office if your child is sick.

  15. Medication • A registered nurse and staff will assist in the administration of medication to students while at camp in accordance with the HPISD medication guidelines and board policy. • Guidelines will be sent home in communication folders and posted on House websites. • Please review these guidelines carefully if your child will be taking medication at camp. • Contact advisory teacher with questions

What to bring Detailed packing lists will be sent home with students. • Sleeping bag/pillow • Towel • Appropriate clothing (weather) • Toiletries • Watch • Backpack • Flashlight • Refillable water bottle Optional items: • $ for snack and gift shop • sunscreen/bug repellent Please label EVERYTHING!

  17. What NOT to bring • Electronics (iPads, eReaders, cell phones, iPods) • Valuables or breakable items • Prank materials

  18. Discipline Students are expected to follow all school rules and camp rules Parents of students who fail to follow directions will be called to come pick up their child from camp.

  19. Meals • Served family style • Kid-friendly menus • Salad bar available at each meal • Dietary needs are addressed • Please email your child’s advisory teacher if your student has any food allergies or other dietary restrictions
