  1. 2 Kings 9:1-13 The prophet Elisha summoned a man from the company of the prophets and said to him, “Tuck your cloak into your belt, take this flask of oil with you and go to Ramoth Gilead. 2 When you get there, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go to him, get him away from his companions and take him into an inner room.

  2. 3 Then take the flask and pour the oil on his head and declare, ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run; don’t delay!”

  3. 4 So the young man, the prophet, went to Ramoth Gilead. 5 When he arrived, he found the army officers sitting together. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said. “For which of us?” asked Jehu. “For you, commander,” he replied.

  4. 6 Jehu got up and went into the house. Then the prophet poured the oil on Jehu’s head and declared, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the Lord’s people Israel.

  5. 7 You are to destroy the house of Ahab your master, and I will avenge the blood of my servants the prophets and the blood of all the Lord’s servants shed by Jezebel. 8 The whole house of Ahab will perish. I will cut off from Ahab every last male in Israel—slave or free.

  6. 9 I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam son of Nebat and like the house of Baasha son of Ahijah. 10 As for Jezebel, dogs will devour her on the plot of ground at Jezreel, and no one will bury her.’ ” Then he opened the door and ran.

  7. 11 When Jehu went out to his fellow officers, one of them asked him, “Is everything all right? Why did this madman come to you?”

  8. 12 “That’s not true!” they said. “Tell us.” Jehu said, “Here is what he told me: ‘This is what the Lord says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ ” 13 They hurried and took their cloaks and spread them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet and shouted, “Jehu is king!”

  10. 2 Kings A little bit of good news A lot of bad news Starts with some good news: Jehu is anointed king by prophet Elisha during the time of Ahab.

  11. Jehu does a lot of things to benefit Israel.. Kills Jezabel and destroyed all of Ahab’s family Kills priests of Baal Destroyed Baal worship in Israel

  12. But he falls short of the Lord’s standard: Worship of idols is the recurring sin that keeps the people from heartfelt worship… The golden calves.

  13. 2 Kings 10 28 So Jehu destroyed Baal worship in Israel. 29 However, he did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam son of Nebat, which he had caused Israel to commit—the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan.

  14. 30 The Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.”

  15. 31 Yet Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit. 32 In those days the Lord began to reduce the size of Israel.

  16. Promise…with a time limitation. Time would run out. Was God giving them 4 generations to straighten out this short coming? Punishment would come. The people of Israel were ultimately exiled to Assyria.

  17. The amazing thing is that it took so long for God to lose His patience in all the midst of craziness… Mother/grandmother killing her children and grandchildren for power (Ch. 11) Pregnant women ripped open (15:16) Lots of assassinations (Ch. 15) King sacrificing son (16:3)

  18. Stealing sacred objects and giving them to other nations as tribute (16:8) Priests building a replica of a foreign altar and remodeling temple in “deference” to Assyria (16:17-18) …God kept looking for a reason to save His people. Truly amazing!

  19. 13:4-5 4 Then Jehoahaz sought the Lord’s favor, and the Lord listened to him, for he saw how severely the king of Aram was oppressing Israel. 5 The Lord provided a deliverer for Israel, and they escaped from the power of Aram. So the Israelites lived in their own homes as they had before.

  20. 13:22-23 22 Hazael king of Aram oppressed Israel throughout the reign of Jehoahaz. 23 But the Lord was gracious to them and had compassion and showed concern for them because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To this day he has been unwilling to destroy them or banish them from his presence.

  21. 14:26-27 26 The Lord had seen how bitterly everyone in Israel, whether slave or free, was suffering; there was no one to help them. 27 And since the Lord had not said he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven, he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Jehoash.

  22. Finally, they were exiled to Assyria. • 17:6 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and deported the Israelites to Assyria.

  23. Why? • 17:7 7 All this took place because the Israelites had sinned against the Lord their God, who had brought them up out of Egypt from under the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They worshiped other gods…

  24. Interesting opportunity for others. The foreigners who were sent to live in Samaria were given a chance to learn how to worship the God of Israel. King of Assyria sent priests back to teach the people. But they worshiped the Lord along with their gods.

  25. God wants to be Lord of all of our life, not just part of our life. Beth Moore: “The giant step in the walk of faith is the one we take when we decide God no longer is a part of our life. He is our life.”

  26. God doesn’t want our divided loyalty. A lot of the people in 2 Kings were worshipping the Lord… along with other things.

  27. A wake-up call for us. We may be doing lots of the right things, but we may be doing other things that oppose our devotion to the Lord, or distract from our devotion.

  28. What are our “idols”? Anything that is our chief focus. Self Stuff Education…Work Pleasure…Substances Friends…Family Religion

  29. All of our life should be lived with the Lord at the center. Relationship with God. All we do should be done out of that perspective on life. We will fall short… just as King David did.

  30. The amazing thing is that the Lord is the God of second chances. He has provided a way to save us. While in the Old Testament we only see glimpses of his grace… in the New Testament we have the fulfillment in Jesus Christ.

  31. We should strive to be committed to the Lord each day… but we can never achieve total devotion. Rest in the grace that has been provided through Jesus Christ as our sins are forgiven.
