Chapter 8: Details “Details are what persuade us that someone is telling the truth” (Prose 196). • a few simple details will help describe a subject better a drawn out explanation • you can learn a lot from people’s buying habits • “We think in generalities, but we live in detail” (Whitehead qtd. in Prose 203). • do not over complicate details in order to get the point across

Chapter 9: Gesture “Writers cover pages with familiar reactions to familiar situations” (Prose 210). • it is not necessary to explain a character’s actions that would be obvious to the reader • the author must not use gestures to enhance a conversation • “Properly used gestures…are like windows opening to let us see a person’s soul…” (Prose 213). • when a character is by his or herself, gestures can help describe emotions or personal experiences
