  1. Temptation in the Wilderness(1:12-13) E-03 An encounter with Satan himself. • The temptation was preceded by 40 days of fasting. (Mark 1:12-13 NKJV) Immediately the Spirit drove Him into the wilderness. And He was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan, and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered to Him. (Mat 4:1 NKJV) Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. (Mat 4:2 NKJV) And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. (Mat 4:3 NKJV) Now when the tempter came to Him,…

  2. Temptation in the Wilderness(Cont’d) E-03 • There are three avenues of temptation. (1 John 2:16 NKJV) For all that is in the world; the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life; is not of the Father but is of the world.

  3. Temptation in the Wilderness(Cont’d) E-03 • There are three avenues of temptation. (Cont’d) • Lust of the flesh (Mat 4:3 NKJV) Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” (Gen 3:6 NKJV) So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, … • Jesus’ response (Mat 4:4 NKJV) But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’”

  4. Temptation in the Wilderness(Cont’d) E-03 • There are three avenues of temptation. (Cont’d) • Lust of the eyes (Mat 4:8-9 NKJV) Again, the devil … showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” (Gen 3:6 NKJV) So when the woman saw that the tree … was pleasant to the eyes, …. • Jesus’ response (Mat 4:10 NKJV) Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’”

  5. Temptation in the Wilderness(Cont’d) E-03 • There are three avenues of temptation. (Cont’d) • Pride of life (Mat 4:6 NKJV) and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’” (Gen 3:6 NKJV) So when the woman saw that the tree was … a tree desirable to make one wise, …. • Jesus’ response (Mat 4:7 NKJV) Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’”

  6. Temptation in the Wilderness(Cont’d) E-03 • From this encounter we see: • The ways Satan tempts mankind: • The desires of the flesh. • The desires of the eye. • The desires of pride. • He approaches when we are weakened. • The way to defeat Satan. • Know the will of the Father. • Be committed to doing it.
