  6. Why Career and Technical Education? • Experts project 47 million job openings in the decade ending 2018. About one-third will require an associate’s degree or certificate, and nearly all will require real-word skills that can be mastered through CTAE. • CTAE Video

Why Career and Technical Education? • Relevance • The need for students to become proficient in program areas is essential- Student retention in school • Certification • Certification is a mark of excellence- It adds credibility to the program • Students/Parents • Certification is an investment into their career- It qualifies students for higher paying jobs • Community • By investing in the future of the students it prepares them for industry standards

Why Career and Technical Education? • Relevance • The need for students to become proficient in program areas are essential- Student retention in school • Berrien High School has developed small learning communities centered around ALL CTAE Program areas • Teachers • Certification is a mark of excellence- It adds credibility to the program • Teachers now use this as a recruitment tool for gaining additional students into their programs • Students/Parents • Certification is an investment into their career- It qualifies students for higher paying jobs • Students can now be more competitive in the job market. • Community • The community will help invest in the future of the students while preparing them for industry standards • Community Organizations funded over 50% of the 2011-12 EOPA’s with certifications

What is End of Pathway Assessments? • A measurement mechanism to ascertain the level of technical skill attainment on behalf of its career pathway completers. • Berrien students can leave high school with valuable industry credentials • National industry certifications, • National occupational assessments, and • State license and state developed assessments

Career Academies • BHS Career Academies are a part of a reform initiative to increase all students’ achievement and prepare students for a career path based on their interest, including postsecondary opportunities. • Small learning communities which involve a cohort scheduled group of students receiving instruction from an interdisciplinary team of teachers. • Students chosen career theme interest • Increases student’s interest, and in turn performance
