Original Purpose •To provide an opportunity for 4-H and FFA members to display projects constructed in agricultural mechanic labs. •To promote the development of skills in agricultural mechanics through competition. • To recognize individual and group accomplishments in the area of agricultural mechanics. • To provide an opportunity for public appreciation of this important phase of 4-H and FFA Youth Programs

Presentation • Presentation includes knowledge of project. • Presentation includes display of the project. • Presentation includes display of required documentation. • Presentation includes the ability of students to answer questions, discuss the planning and construction of the project, and demonstrate the project (showmanship).
Metal Projects • Materials used and reasons for use. • Plan and bill-of-materials. • Design used. • Welding, cutting, and forming processes and procedures. • Assembly procedures. • Preparation for and painting.
Projects Utilizing Lumber • Species or type(s) of lumber. • Treatment process and safety or use precautions. • Plan and bill-of-materials. • Equipment used and operation of. • Recommended fasteners. • Recommended finish, if applicable.
Spraying Equipment • Pressure, flow rate, coverage width, capacity, etc. • Materials used and reasons for use. • Plan and bill-of-materials. • Welding, cutting, and forming processes and procedures. • Assembly procedures. • Preparing for and painting.
Mounted and Pull-Type Tractor Equipment • 3-point and P.T.O. specifications & dimensions. • Materials used and reasons for use. • Plan and bill-of-materials. • Welding, cutting and forming processes and procedures. • Assembly procedures. • Preparing for and painting.
Hydraulic Equipment • Flow rate, pressure, type of valves, type of pump/motor, actuator, type and viscosity of oil used in system. • Plan and bill-of-materials • A hydraulic schematic should be included in documentation and understood by students. • Welding, cutting and forming processes and procedures. • Assembly and painting procedures.
Electrical Projects • Voltage, amperage, conductor size and type, types of motors and controls, circuit protection, GFCI, etc. • An electrical schematic should be included in documentation and understood by students. • An understanding of processes used in construction of the wood or metal parts of the project.
Livestock Equipment • An understanding of the wood, metal, hydraulic, and electrical procedures used in construction. • Explain how it works and the dimensions used, etc.
Trailers • Metal and wood construction • Running gear location and capacity. • Spring hanger spacing. • Requirements to meet TxDOT rules and regulations. • Federal lighting charts and/or other TxDOT regulations. • Hydraulics if equipped and schematic.
Entering Projects at San AntonioSpecial Rule 1 for 2011 • Projects entered correctly including naming. • Entry fee is $30 per project. • Ag Mech entries must be on official group summary sheet along with other Junior entries. • Exhibitor names and social security numbers are required on entry form. • It is imperative that exhibitor names and project descriptions (names) be correct. • Use San Antonio document for San Antonio and Houston document for Houston.
Show History • First show at Houston had students present, but few questions were asked by the judge. • Plans and bill-of-materials were required. • Photos were added to document that projects were constructed by students. • DOT and ASABE standards and regulations were added. • Safe conditions and personal safety equipment along with evidence of adult supervision were added as a requirement in photos. • San Antonio requires additional information. • Students now show projects and meet the public. They are SHOWS. I hope we can say they continue to put the exhibitors first. That is our goal.
