Network Access Control • There are two main levels for controlling user access: • MAC layer • IP Layer • MAC layer – the Wi-Fi uses two types of techniques: • Based on MAC layer authentication • Keys / pass-phrases (WPA-WEP-PSK) • Certificates (802.1x) • Requires minimum user skills (for embedded clients) • IP layer – service access control (e.g. internet access): • Based on user authentication • Based on the 802.1x • Dialer – IP based or PPPoE • Captive portal • All of the above requires a RADIUS server for the authentication
