  5. Supplemental Agents • Stimulants - psychoactive drugs that induce temporary improvements in either mental or physical functions or both • Can improve focus, alertness and energy • “Uppers” • Anabolic Agents - A group of synthetic hormones that promote the storage of protein and the growth of tissue, sometimes used by athletes to increase muscle size and strength.

  6. Anabolic Steroids • Synthetically created to act like naturally occurring sex hormones • Testosterone • Androgenic and anabolic effects • Androgenic effects include growth development • Masculinization in males • Anabolic effects promotes protein synthesis in skeletal muscles; increasing muscle size

  7. Anabolic Steroids

  8. Anabolic Steroids

  9. Anabolic Steroids

  10. Anabolic Steroids

  11. Andro vs. Anabolic • Individuals want to maximize anabolic effects and minimize andro effects • No steroids exist that have only anabolic effects

  12. Steroids in Sports • 6.5% of males and 1.9% of female athletes are taking anabolic steroids • 2.5% of intercollegiate athletes are taking anabolic steroids

  13. Negative Effects of Steroids • Teens • Premature closure of bones • Acne • Enlarged mammary glands • Males • Mood swings • Aggressive behavior • Increased cholesterol • Reduction in genital size

  14. Negative Effects of Steroids • Females • Hair loss • Voice deepening • Increased facial hair • Menstrual irregularities

  15. Human Growth Hormone • Naturally released by the pituitary gland • Amount varies depending on age and developmental period of your life (more during puberty) • Lack of HGH can result in dwarfism • HGH is much more difficult to detect than anabolic steroids

  16. Caffeine • Central nervous stimulant • Most overused drug in the United States • Awareness of it’s effect on increasing alertness and decreasing fatigue • Increased intake of caffeine can lead to irritability, increased HR and headaches • Headaches can be withdrawl symptoms

  17. Caffeine Physiological Effect • Enhances the use of fat during endurance exercise • How many Calories does a gram of fat yield vs. Carbohydrates? • More energy • Caffeine allows calcium to be more available during muscle contraction • Positive caffeine result can be from 5-6 cups of coffee

  18. Homework • Complete missing work • Read your article. Be prepared to debate in class on Monday
