  2. Who Am I? • Experience in forecasting/broadcasting (“weather weenie”) • Teaching/training (academic, gov’t) • Statistical model development • 15 years experience in policy coordination and team leadership with diverse groups

  3. My Branch Oversees Policy For… - Public Products (forecasts, web) - SVR Weather Products (T-storms/tornado) - Winter Weather Products (watches, warnings) - Health Product Collaboration (AQ, Heat, UV) But relevant to this meeting, I also oversee… - NOAA’s operational Fire Wx support My work in all areas requires consensus building to ensure consistent national policy

  4. What I Hope to Bring… I value effective collaboration above all else to get the job done!

  5. What I’ve Learned… • Fire Weather is the “Severe Weather of the West” …and sometimes other places too • The impact to life and property can be enormous …5 houses saved at WUI = $10M - $15M

  6. Our Job is to Define Fire Weather Requirements and Standards • But we also have the opportunity to: - Highlight the potential economic benefits of effective fire weather information - Provide information that may impact budget priorities across multiple agencies - Educate: Downward, laterally, and upwards!

  7. Specifically, We Can… • Answer: What do land management partners need with regard to weather info? • Establish: Clear national standards for how that information is provided. • Define: Needed improvements in our national infrastructure and capabilities – find synergies! • Prioritize: What are the most important needs to get into our respective budget processes?

  8. How We’ll Get The Job Done • Today: Get the Big Picture

  9. How We’ll Get The Job Done • Tomorrow – roll up our sleeves! - Discuss informational needs for key functional areas - Discuss strategy for survey development - Agree on future meetings/follow on processes - Determine how to best work with NWCG and FENWT to ensure their needs are included.

  10. What I Request of You… • Participate fully • Communicate constructively • Advise us of issues, including suggested course corrections • Help me learn…and forgive any transgressions!
