  1. MrV’s Solving Word Problems 1. Read the whole problem slowly, all the way through HW only: Write down the Problem # and summarize BRIEFLY Examples: “76. Spaulding Co. Checking” “78. Monthly Car Expenses” 2. Find the Question that is asked (there may be more than 1) HW/Test: Re-Write it as an Answer Form with measures but no value Examples: “$_____total deposits” “$_____ each month” “___cm by ___cm” 3. Find the numbers within the problem HW/Test: List the numbers and their meanings 4. Figure out how to compute the numbers to get the answer HW/Test: Find the = , create the equation, and solve to get an answer value 5. Check your answer value(s) HW: If it matches the book’s answer, copy into the Answer Form and circle it. If it doesn’t match, either: correctly redo the problem ormark it wrong. Test: Double-check the copied numbers and your calculations: fix (if needed), then copy the value(s) to Answer Form

  2. Divide the Word Problem into two expressions: Find the = Sign Phrases that Mean “=“ Equals Is (was) Represents Is equal to Has Is the same as Amounts to First Part of the Word Problem Other Part of the Word Problem This is how to show the original problem in your homework when you are doing word problems.

  3. Ex1. The number is 5 The sum of four times the number(n) and six Two times the sum of a number(n) and eight equals 2(n + 8) = 4n + 6

  4. Five times the sum of the number (n) and twelve Nine less than twice a number (n) Pr1. The number is -23 is 2n – 9 = 5(n + 12)

  5. n n+2 n+4 Ex2. The even integers are 4, 6, 8 6 more than sum of 1st and 3rd 3 times the 2nd integer is 3(n + 2) = (n + n + 4) + 6 3n + 6 = 2n + 10 – 2n – 6 = – 2n – 6 n = 4

  6. n n+1 n+2 Ex2. The integers are -5, -4, -3 Sum of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd – 12 is n + (n + 1) + (n + 2) = – 12 3n + 3 = – 12 – 3= – 3 3n = – 15 n = – 5

  7. Ex3. Sun’s Fahr Temp is 11,240F 4740 less than Fahrenheit temperature(f) 6500K Kelvin temperature is 6500 = f – 4740

  8. Pr3. _4_ carbon atoms Twice the number of carbon atoms(c) in a butane molecule Octane molecule has 8 carbon atoms represents 8 = 2c

  9. Ex4: Shorter is _4 ft, longer is _6 ft Draw a diagram: Three times the shorter (x) Twice the length of the longer (10 ‒ x) is 3x = 2(10 – x)

  10. Pr4: _134 10-speeds made daily Four times the # of 3-speeds (160 – t) 30 less than the # of 10-speeds (t) equals 4(160 – t) = t - 30
